My trolling kibitzers have suggested that the new word rhyme with 'orange'!

Now that Wimbledon is over we're all set to go! Crambo's word rhymes with the complete syllable 'set'.

Not the dreaded internet either! Could it be a UK County? No, that's a proper noun. How about a certain way of thinking?

#7 Indeed, not a proper noun, Agreed - playing Crambo requires a certain mindset, but alas not the word we are after.
#8 My initial response was to regret that its not an egret, but then I twigged that you meant avocet. Nice thought, but not Crambo's word.
#9 So cute! I'm almost tempted to change my mind as to the chose word!

#17 I did Latin at school, but don't recall placet, or its use in English. What a mind-expanding activity Crambo is!

s On "placet" (infinitive: placere) (17>19)

I havenʻt heard of "placet" as an English word, but justJim ʻs definition (17) is plausible.
In Latin it belongs to the 2nd Conjugation, which has comparatively few members
compared to the 1st and 3rd; but even so it wasnʻt in our Latin high school text book, and I donʻt think it would come up much in Caesar and Cicero (if those are the beginning authors (19) that you used in school, rodney.)
Curiously the future tense, 1st person of "placere" IS
an English word: "placebo". I donʻt remember ever seeing the verb used except in the third person, but the
meaning in Latin of "placebo" (1st person, future)
would be: "youʻre gonna like me."
As for what is the Crambo! word: "Ne in mente quidem!"

#20 A nearby building development advertised their web site as aplacetolive.com.au. We always parsed that as 'a placet olive' and wondered what placet meant! Now I know. Reassure me that there wasn't a suggestion in there.

Ifʻt be the Crambo! word, that is some feat!

The 1st letter of __ __ __
(25) isnʻt S or J.
But I admit that the athletic J E T s (American football) of the N.Y./N.J. area are better known than
the __ E T s (basketball) of the same
area. Canʻt be right, in any case, if "The syllable count" of
24 is "correct".

Oh dear, I had two clues ready but none of them seem to fit. I'll try them anyway: one was to pander and the other was an extra piece of material. Someone just shouted another answer in my ear - what it is to be married to a crossword king! How about a colour that is also an apple!

#35 Neither cosset or gusset were Crambo's words, but The Crossword King has struck gold. Crambo's word is indeed "russet". A colour, a characteristic of apples, and also a potato. Not orange, but not far from it! Over to TCK for the next round?

I remember guessing
"__ __ __ __" before,
And was withholding it, not to bore
You with a repeat, but it must have been in a diff-
-erent -et rhyming round. So, if
that is the case, I'll guess:
A word meaning "beginning", and I confess
It is highfalutin, or at least archaic.
--Did I somehow the Crambo! word make?

I'll start another thread, although I feel a bit of a cheat as it wasn't my idea. TKC doesn't play. I'll have to stop telling him what I'm doing.

37>39

"stumped by (__ __ __ __ __)"

I'm looking for a two-syllable
word, and now that I think of it, the guess is
the rhyme word itself--preceded by
a prepositional prefix.
As a common noun, it's "beginning"; "start".
As a proper name, it's a small town on
Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

43rolandperkins

37>41>42

"Onset" is right. Yes, 37 was missing a space; 41 has the correct 5 spaces.
