The users of this library literally approached their informational needs geo-centrically -- they wanted to be able to choose a part of the world and "go to it" in the library to find all there was to read on the subject....the librarians were clever enough to recognize this fact and treated the library itself like a map, physically shelving books about the same region next to one another and arranging the whole collection according to their relative positions on the globe, so that a user could walk to the eastern corner of the room and find books on China, or to the southern corner to find books on Antarctic exploration, etc. -- this arrangement of the collection persisted until the 1980's!
