After becoming aware of him rather later than most, I have been reading a bit about the Colombian writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez recently and thought that two of his books in particular would make a great addition to my book collection. Although I haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of his works before, what I have heard so far makes his books sound very intriguing; he seems like a writer I would like to explore in more detail. As a result, I am expecting the - hopefully imminent –arrival of The Informers and The Sound of Things Falling through the post. Has anyone else here read any of his books

Colombian novelist Juan Gabriel Vásquez talks about his book The Sound of Things Falling:

i read both these books and enjoyed them. Vasquez's voice is unique. He explores the history of Columbia from its recent past of WWll (The INformers) and the Drug Wars (Things Falling). His characters are rich as is his descriptions of the country, its people and history.

for more details I reviewed both books on my page.

enjoy.

I've read all three of his novels that have been translated into English: The Informers, The Secret History of Costaguana and The Sound of Things Falling. I liked all three, but especially the first and third one, and I've reviewed the first two novels on LT. He's easily my favorite of the current generation of South American authors, and is definitely worthy of a wider audience in the English speaking world.

Thank you both, berthirsch and Kizdoc, it has been a pleasure to read your extensive reviews of the Vasquez’s books. Obviously, I made the right choice. Now, if only the two books would arrive…

Just finished my first Vásquez novel, The Sound of Things Falling. What a wonderful book, I became totally captivated by the story from the first page. If this book is anything to go by, Vásquez will certainly become one of my favorite authors. I hope that The Informers, which has been on order for almost two months now, will arrive soon.

The Sound of Things Falling made the short list for this year's IMPAC literary award. Quite an honor.
