I sprang for the deluxe 4 disc version which arrived yesterday. Well worth it for the incredible sounding Isle of Wight performance with the Band. I had listened to the bootleg versions many years ago, and enjoyed it well enough despite the poor sound quality. But this remaster brings out so many nuances in the instrumental backing by the Band as well as occasional backing vocals, that it sounds like a completely new concert. Garth Hudson's masterful organ playing can be clearly heard on many tracks, and he even plays accordion on "I Pity the Poor Immigrant". At times energetic and rollicking as on Highway 61 Revisited and Maggie's Farm. At other moments laid back and countrified as on the performances of songs from Nashville Skyline and John Wesley Harding, it is great that this wonderful performance by Dylan and The Band can finally be fully appreciated.

The accompanying hardcover books of photographs and liner notes are well put together, with many great previously unseen photos of Dylan relaxing on the farm in Woodstock.

Thanks for the review. I was gonna skip the deluxe edition as I remember my crappy bootleg of Isle of Wight; but I think I'll spring for it after all. And I'm actually looking forward to the stripped down SP stuff too. I know it's all over the map and has its share of flat or weird shit but I enjoyed a lot of it. Great vocal on Copper Kettle for instance -- I wanna hear it without the strings and chick singers...

Copper Kettle is my favorite track from the original SP. The stripped down SP tracks are all improvements over their original release IMO, though Belle Isle is still dreadful. Also, some of the previously unreleased tracks, like Pretty Saro and Tell Old Bill, are incredible vocal performances. It's hard to understand why they were left off the original album.
