I just finished this Western, published in 1999 , which stayed interesting to the end. The story unfolds through the perspectives of a number of characters who appear to be unrelated, but who all connect some way near the conclusion. Characters include two adults who were children raised by coyotes; African American cowboys; a white girl who is kidnapped by the Kiowa, is "rescued", and escapes to return to her Kiowa family; a Dreamer; and assorted relatives, friends and acquaintances. The land is also a character of merit. There is a cattle stampede that is so harrowing and hilarious in the tradition of Will James, that it had me laughing out loud through 4-5 pages, even in the re-reading of it a couple of times. That scene is a classic for anyone who is familiar with horses and cattle.
