What do you think of Peter Capaldi being chosen as the new doctor? Matt Smith will be bowing out on Christmas day, will you be sorry to see him go? He's certainly been one of the most jovial doctors we have had. I found this trailer for anyone who hasn't already seen it - Daleks, Cybermen, the Weeping Angels - all return .. Love them all.

Capaldi is a brilliant actor - and choosing someone mature, the show can move to a somewhat new tone. Plus - the words of Baker at the end of the 50th anniversary episode opened the door for quite a lot of interesting possibilities... :)

I will be sorry to see Matt Smith go, as I have been sorry every time an actor left that part, but I have faith that Capaldi will be fantastic and that in short order I'll love him as much as his predecessors.

I wish I could be around for the 100th ..! But with new writers in the future, it will definitely be exciting to see how the show and doctor continue to evolve.

My favourite (as with many ladies) was David Tennant and how sad it was when he uttered his last words: "I don't want to go!" But there hasn't been an actor who was ever chosen wrongly for the part - although I wasn't too keen on Colin Baker, all of them made the doctor unique in their own way. Roll on Christmas day - :)

I've not been a big fan of Matt Smith unfortunately so I'm looking forward to a change!

On a related note...

Is everybody totally grooving on the 12th doctor's newly unveiled costume? Loving it! Quietly cool, a he-means-business look with just a dash of color.

Rebel Time Lord indeed!

His trousers look a bit small, but otherwise looking good!

I always thought Matt Smith was a bit of a wimp, so I'm not sorry to let him go. I think Peter Capaldi is a brilliant doctor.

Peter Capaldi is definitely The Doctor! I like him a lot.

I hope they keep Missy as a recurring character. She was brilliant.

Yes, definitely! I was "spoiled" before the episode where she revealed who she was (stupid Twitter! I should have known better than to look at it on the day of broadcast!) but I thought she was interesting even before that :)

Isn't it sort of inevitable that we're going to see more of Missy? I think her story isn't quite finished yet.

It's almost here!

And so another Doctor goes. I wonder who might be next!?

I wonder if Idris Elba may still be convinced (he turned it down once). Luther is done now... he does have his film franchise roles but still...

Or a female Doctor....

And #13 is! Jodie Whittaker from Broadchurch.

I think this is all really rather exciting to be honest. I love Doctor Who, but have felt that in recent years something needs to properly shake things up. Can't wait to see how it all works out next year!

At the risk of sounding cantankerous, catching up on this thread:

-- I didn't mind Matt Smith going. My top 5 doctors are Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Peter Davison ... in that order, I think. I saw Baker first, back in the '80s. I got used to Matt Smith, but I never really warmed up to him.

-- I would've liked to have had Capaldi as Doctor without Moffat running the season. May have liked him more. My lack of like (which is not the same as dislike) is more about Moffat, I suspect. Some of Capaldi's stories were full of non-action. That's the writer/show runner, not the actor.

-- I'm female, but I still don't know that I want the Doctor to regenerate into a female. The whole symbiont thing from Star Trek -- Jadzia Dax, e.g., and being male or female depending on the pairing -- I can get. But unless this has to do with River Song's effect on his regenerations, I'm not sure it's logical to me. (And I don't "read ahead" online or in magazines, and I don't have cable, so I don't see Doctor Who until it's out on DVD. So maybe this has been covered somewhere.)

-- I really hope the new female Doctor, personality-wise, is nothing like River Song. I like kickass heroines, but not badass ones. And River Song was a bit too badass for me.

>20 ReneeMarie:

But we already saw one Time Lord (the Master) regenerating as a female :) So it is not such a great surprise that we get another one.

Yeah. Didn't really like that turn of events, either. I keep hoping one of these times the Master/Missy will stay dead.... And they're a villain, not the hero/protagonist, so it wasn't something I had to think about every story.
