In 2013, I counted both Kindle books and actual books. It seems like actual books are starting to take over again. In 2013, I added 35 actual books to my shelves and read 25.

In 2014, I'd like to read at least 36 actual books. I do not plan to count Kindle books for this challenge next year.

I'm hoping to read more actual books than I purchase or otherwise acquire, in 2014.

In fact, for 2014, I intend to track the actual books read.

Last year I didn't keep a list of my reads on my ROOT thread, but this year I plan to. I keep most of my reading stats and lists etc in OneNote but like to put it on my posts as well so I can remind myself when I'm posting if I covered everything and if I want to compare and contrast different books or series.

Yes, since it's books only, not Kindle books, I plan to keep track of them. I didn't do it for 2013, just a list of how many books and how many Kindle books. So far for 2013, I'm at 85 Kindle books and 25 regular books.

I don't want to list 35 numbers. It seems too imposing. Just do it in 5-book increments.

Hi, Linda! I keep track of my ROOTS on my thread over here, but my "regular" reading just goes on my own spreadsheet. Otherwise, I keep forgetting which books I've counted over here or not.

Hi, Linda! "Antique reading devices." I love it!

Finally started reading my first Antique Reading Device item (aka book) of the year. C.C. Benison's Ten Lords A-Leaping.

My Thingaversary is coming up in a few days so, of course, I have to buy some books to celebrate. It's my 5th anniversary so I'm aiming for 6 books.

This is possibly a stupid question, but would this be one of twelve books in a series?

#21 Not stupid. His character is Tom Christmas, a vicar/sleuth. He started at 12 and is working his way down. That is, my current book is the third in the series. Twelve Drummers Drumming and Eleven Pipers Piping were first and second.

Thanks. They must be pretty good, or you wouldn't be reading the third. How are they regarding violence, if you don't mind saying? I love mysteries, but need them to be in the more lighthearted vein.

These are definitely light-hearted cozies. Of course, there's a murder or two but it's not at all graphic.

My only gripe is that they are way longer than they need to be. I usually figure cozies to be about 250 pages or so. Ten Lords A-Leaping is 490 pages.

That is long! But worth it for the right book. :) Thanks for letting me know about them: definitely something to check out at the library.

For what it's worth, I liked the second book in the Tom Christmas series better than the first one. Perhaps part of it is the fact that the plot involves a Burns Supper. I received Ten Lords for Christmas, appropriately enough, and am looking forward to reading it.

I liked the eleven pipers one better than the twelve drummers, too.

The ten lords book is an ER book. I got it late but want to finish it and move on. I assume that nine ladies dancing will be out later in 2014.

Finally on the board with my first finished ROOT of 2014. Yay!!

Finally, at long last, after 5 tries, and then two weeks' worth of reading, I finally finished Bleak House by Charles Dickens.

Clocking in at over 1,000 pages, I should get bonus points!!

Congrats on finishing Bleak House! It's one of my favorites, but I know Dickens isn't everyone's cup of tea. My husband loathes Dickens, and my dad had to read Bleak House in college and was still bitter about it decades later. LOL

There ist that old saying about If at first you don't succeed...I haven't managed David Copperfield yet. One day, I keep promising myself.

1,000 plus pages. Whew! Are you playing Book Bingo (in the category challenge)? There's a square for 'book over 500 pages'.

I read my third ROOT of the month so I'm right on pace.

Hurray, I finally finished the mammoth bio of Woodrow Wilson, Wilson by A. Scott Berg. 750 pages of tiny text.

Great job, Linda! I'm also doing a 700+ page on the 5 granddaughters of Queen Victoria that become queens in their own right. It is interesting, but the text is tiny and the book so thick! I made a promise to myself that I will read 30 pages per day at a minimum.

#40 Keep at it!! This was an overdue ER book and I was sort of dreading it because it was so long but I made myself read a little bit every night. Eventually, it was the only book I was reading.

Glad to be done. I'm up for something lighter for awhile.

Thanks. I read a lot of mysteries in the 250--300 page range. The Woodrow Wilson bio gives me two lengthy books read this year, that one plus Bleak House.

Just a tad behind my pace, one book behind one-third of my off the shelf books for the year.

Once I start reading mysteries more, I can quickly make up for lost time. During the summer, I like to sit outside and read actual books, not Kindle books, anyway.

Ahhh, with a laptop and wireless internet, you can take LT to the porch WITH your book (and ice-tea) and make an afternoon of it!

Right now, my porch is a mess. We replaced some carpets, and haven't been able to get them hauled away yet. (Long story involving the incompetence/inadequacy of the company that has "exclusive rights" to haul refuse in our town.) The weather is finally spring-y, and I want my porch back!

Wow, what a sad ROOT month for me. Only one ROOT read, despite my good intentions.

Eh, no worries! There's plenty of time left this year to complete the challenge!

This month, except for the one Heartland Prize winner I need to read before I attend the awards ceremony, my hope is to read only books off my actual shelves.

We're putting together about a dozen bags of stuff to donate (home pick-up) for YWCA. I went through old clothes and donated a bag of clothes. Also rummaged through my bookshelves and picked out 8 books to donate. Left a nice little space which I quickly filled by shifting over some other books.

First amount of bookshelf progress in awhile. By browsing through, I also came upon a few I'd like to read, including one I checked out of the library yesterday. Guest of Honor by Deborah Davis.

Yeah for making room in the book case!

Mission accomplished!! I just finished my 36th ROOT of the year, which was my goal.

The book that did it was a nice pb copy of A Presumption of Death by Jill Paton Walsh and Dorothy L. Sayers, which is the second book in the continuation of the Lord Peter Wimsey series.

Hopefully, I can pile on to this total.

I discovered that, for one upcoming book, I found that I actually own two copies (yes, this sometimes happens even with LT). I say that one ought to count as two, if I finish it.

Two more books to my total. I finished Wicked Weaves by Joyce and Jim Lavene. Oddly, I had two pb copies. I've put one in the Laura's mom bag and one in the library donation bag.

Way to go, Linda! I just finished Joyce and Jim Lavene's A Timely Vision and gave it to my Mom. I think we will both become fans of their work as I really liked it and I think she will too! I've requested the first book in another new series of theirs, Spell Booked, and I'm hoping that my library processes it and gets it out to me soon! Not that I "need" another new series, or another library book checked out, but you know... it's books! Hard to resist. :)
