Any ideas on cleaning cloth and buckram bindings?

I purchased many Folio books through the years and a few of the earlier cloth bindings need some modest cleaning besides simple dusting. Any suggestions?

I've used pre-moistened lens cleaners on all sorts of covers with good results. They work especially well for shiny paper trade paperback covers, but I've used them on cloth, too. You may want to test in an inconspicuous spot, etc.

Have you tried asking the Folio Society?

You could try dry cleaning pads (not dry cleaning as in clothing, just cleaning that is dry), also called draftsman's cleaning pads. These can be found in art supply stores. There is a YouTube demo for using these to clean books, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbo3CxD9CcY

I haven't used this technique myself, but it looks promising.

A book repair specialist I know has sometimes found that soft white bread (e.g. Wonder brand in the U.S. or an equivalent) can clean many book surfaces. I haven't had a project to encourage me to buy a loaf of bread for the purpose for experimenting. I have considered it for two boxes of railroad pulp magazines to see how safely it works.

>5 Keeline:

It cleans pencil writing nicely and without damaging the paper... so it has a chance of working :)

#4 - Is that clip intentionally without sound or is my PC having some problem with it?

I have a plastic eraser called 'MONO' by Tombo (part PE03A is the one I have) that works well on removing pencil marks and cleaning some cloth covers - depends on what has soiled them, of course.

Never would have thought to use a paint bush...

I just ordered my first set from Foliosociety and before they arrive I wanted to know what to do incase they get dusty or worse......

You might try a bagel - hold the cream cheese.

I picked up Klassische Plastik der Griechen in an antique mall for $2.50. Even though I don’t read German it looked interesting because it was exceptionally well-bound and was printed in Switzerland in the middle of the war 1943. Unfortunately, it was bound in white and is quite dirty. I’ve tried an eraser and bread without luck. I’ve not tried the other suggestions yet. Ideas? I’ll be back with a pic shortly. It’s about Ancient Greek statuary. If any of you German speakers can translate plastik to a suitable English word. My translator says plastic but that can’t be right.

Linguee says sculpture or statuary art. https://www.linguee.com/german-english/translation/plastik.html

Note: plastic surgery.

The word 'plastic' has to do with shapeable. In this context it is art that is 3d.

That was my guess but I wasn’t sure. Thanks.

Update - I got most of the dirt off with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I also had a librarian friend recommend this https://www.thelibrarystore.com/category/s?keyword=Cleaning+powder
