My goal for this year is to read at least 2 books a week, not counting rereads. Half non-fiction, mostly focusing on the World Wars, Cold War and Native American history. I also want to read the Redwall series, which has been on my list for ages.

Fiction:
The Husband’s Secret – Liane Moriarty
The Game – Diana Wynne Jones
The Recruit – Robert Muchamore
Commemorations - Hans Herlin
The Slap - Christos Tsiolkas

Nonfiction:
Sybil – Flora Rheta Schreiber
The Journal of Helene Berr
War Dog - Damien Lewis
The Hot Zone – Richard Preston
Hilary and Jackie - Hilary du Pré

3rd-9th February:

War Dog – Damien Lewis
The story of Czech pilot Robert Bozdech and his dog Antis, whom he rescued in France and smuggled into Britain after the Nazis invaded. They were so inseparable that Bozdech took Antis on missions, and he became the squadron’s mascot (he even had a special oxygen mask made for him!) He was wounded by enemy fire several times & received the Dickin Medal after the war ended.

The Hot Zone – Richard Preston
This book is about two of the world’s deadliest viruses, Ebola and Marburg. They are classed as Level 4, while AIDS is only Level 2. Preston writes about their discovery, and describes in incredibly gory detail what they do to their hosts. In 1976, a new strain of Ebola ended up in America through a group of monkeys imported for scientific research. The Army had to be called in to contain it & destroy the monkeys before an epidemic could begin. They found out that this strain spread through the air, which is quite frankly terrifying. Do not read this if you are squeamish!!

Oh, there's no "behind"! Just enjoy your reading, don't stress about the numbers.

10th-23rd February:

The Slap - Christos Tsiolkas

Hilary and Jackie - Hilary du Pré - the controversial biography of Jacqueline du Pré, written by her sister.

Commemorations - Hans Herlin - a novel set in West Germany after WW2. The protagonist is seeking revenge on the SS doctor who killed his lover. I didn't find it very interesting - the relationship between Pikola and Julia was barely described, and the style was very emotionless overall - but I did learn a lot about life for the Germans post-WW2.

Welcome to the group! I read The Hot Zone back in high school and loved it. I was convinced I was going to grow up to be a virologist because of that book (I am not a virologist).

Good luck with all the nonfiction!
