I've got The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester on my Nook. Has anyone read this before?
2GeorgiaDawn
I have the book, somewhere, but have never read it. I need to find it!

Ooh, I'm up for this - it's been on my 'ought to read at some point' list for a while now (I think that's probably Jo Walton's fault).
5Jim53
One of the great early classics of SF, and a personal favorite. Thanks for the excuse for a re-read!

I'm with Jim53. Excellent, classic sci-fi. Some Count of Monte Cristo underpinnings.

This is on my Tbr pile. I'm looking forward to it.

How serendipitous, I just finished "reading", okay listening to it today. Ronincats pointed me to this thread from my 75 Group thread. I've starred the thread and I'll check back in when you guys start reading it.

Huh, just realized I had purchased some Alfred Bester books for my husband on his new Kindle for Christmas, but I didn't connect it with this read, although it is quite possible that I got the idea from this book being on the list. Anyway, I don't have this book. I'll ask hubby if he is interested, and if so, I'll buy it. After reading that first sentence, I think I'll go to bed.

Oh, no, this is too perfect- I was just thinking about this book... Its original title was Tiger! Tiger!. I am preparing to reread Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' Den of Shadows books before Bloodwitch comes out, and also was thinking of going back to the Melissa Scott novel I started rereading last fall...
Which means I could read, in sequence, Tiger! Tiger!, Burning Bright, In the Forests of the Night.
I think I'm obligated.

>10 sandstone78:: Oh, that is perfect! You must do it!

Thank you, thank you! ;)
Anyone else want to go for all three? I can vouch for the quality of Burning Bright, and I'm fairly sure I would have vouched for the quality of In the Forests of the Night when I was about twelve (I'll see if it still holds up now).
Now to track down that Bester... the bookstores my destination.
(Sorry, someone had to!)

I have just realised that the reason why the name of this author is so naggingly familiar is that it is the name of the PSI cop in Babylon 5 - DOH!!

I asked my husband if he would like this, he said yes, and then I accidentally loaded it on to my Kindle, too. Guess I'm in for the February read!

I'm sure I've read this, although LT claims it's not in my Library... hmmm. Did a book escape cataloguing, or have I mislaid it somewhere, preLT, or am I thinking of a different book?
#10 - excellant.

>16 sandstone78:: I'll join you for Burning bright, as it's been on Mount Tbr for a while.

Read it in one sitting last night. Interesting world-building, characters and events I didn't care much for though they were certainly memorable.
24clamairy
I agree, Jarandel. I'm not liking anyone so far. I'm about a quarter of the way through and I think I might bail out on this one.

I have 33 pages left to read. There are some interesting twists in the plot, but I am not blown away. It is one that I will have to think about before comment but it is generating thoughts regarding motivation, loyalty, etc...
I agree with those commetators who have stated there isn't a likeable person to be found in the book. I am glad, however, that I have stuck with the story.
I am keeping it front of mind that the novel was published the year before I was born and with my being the same age as the space race I make allowances for Alfred Bester as he didn't have the experience of seeing television footage of people working in space. I suspect he was not very technically minded, but if I am wrong, then he hid it well.

Hi all! Haven't been around much lately, but this one's been on my Kindle for a while and MrsLee mentioned the group read on facebook so I thought I'd join in.
I'm only on chapter 3, but so far I'm enjoying it, although the patois of the main character is really annoying in a JarJar Binks way.

Exactly! I thought it was my copy, but he really does talk that way. Argh.
And welcome back, my friend. :o)

#26 - Hah! My Facebook account is justified! ;) Can't wait to start reading this, but my husband is in the middle of it and we share a Kindle account, so I have to wait for him to finish. I am one of the few people on earth who loved JarJar Binks, but I'm not sure how I will like to read it.
