Short Story Collection Read-A-Long February 2014

Hello Fellow SS Readers ~

Welcome to a (late) start to some short story sharing! I had PRK and am slowly regaining the ability to read. Right now I am doing okay with large print editions, of which there are scant few short story collections. I'm going to see if I can rustle up some Alice Munro large print. Anyone who wins the Nobel will maybe have greater distribution options :)

But I wanted to share this. I got a subscription to www.one-story.com and only had two so far, but boy, well worth a gander. They seem to pick a really wide range of great new authors. The last one turned me on to a new collection One More Thing: Stories and More Stories by B. J. Novak (Ryan from "The Office" U.S.). Wow, it was really good. The Story was "A Good Problem to Have." Anyway, the book just came out (and was 20% off at Barnes & Noble yesterday) so just thought I'd toss it out there if anyone had an interest. I may download it when I can "graduate" to my Kindle.

I just discovered this thread and I''m wondering if anyone would like to do a group read-a-long for March. It will take me this long to get a copy of whatever book people choose.
Another note-there is this exceptional app called Storyville. You can get it on a tablet or
kindle now. It is 4.95 for four months and every week they automatically send you a new
story, usually a brand new story. They send you a picture of the cover of the book, an author
bio and a short description of where the idea for the story came from. i have been using the
app since it first came out and it has introduced me to many wonderful new writers.

Can anyone suggest any great new novellas? I think the genre is as exciting as short fiction,but it stretches the boundaries a bit. Looking forward to hearing what people have read and loved.

Alans, have you read Train Dreams by Denis Johnson? It's exceptional.

Has anyone read the Afternoon Lights series?

Hagelstein, I just picked up Train Dreams, really looking forward to reading it.

Finished two more great collections of short fiction over the past week. Tom Barbash's Stay Up With Me is wonderful and reminded me a great deal of Tobias Wolf'sshort fiction. Then
this past weekend I read with great joy Tom Perrotta's Nine Incheswhich isn't as well done as the Barbashbut still a lot of fun. Funny they both deal with troubled young men. I have to read some short fiction by women next.

(We should probably have started a March thread... but never mind!)

No, I'm in between short story collections just now. I will though be reading Big Bad Love by Larry Brown soon. He's probably my favourite writer at the moment.

Polaris I just put a hold on the Larry Brown. His gritty realism sounds like something I might enjoy so I'm going to give him a try.
