The other thing that reflects on the effect of the Civil War wasn't just the death toll. Since the battlefield surgery was very rough and ready, and a good deal short of the cutting edge in medicine at the time, the effect on the public and the survivors of the huge numbers of mutilated veterans, a figure I've found hard to find, must have been horrendous as well.

From my personal family history your words couldn't be truer. My great-great grandfather (Confederate) was wounded 4 or five times, losing a leg and part of an arm. At the end of the war he managed to walk home and continued to plow his own farm. We found where the state of North Carolina bought him a leg. He died at 38 twelve years after the war apparently from the cumulative effects of all his wartime injuries.
