Which Australian novel did you most enjoy seeing turned into a film? And was the film better than the book, or vice versa?

I have wracked my brain regarding this question and all that I can recall of late is seeing The Mango Tree by Ronald McKie, it is an old movie and was not as good as the novel.

I received a copy of Kit Denton's 'Breaker Morant' as a school prize but found the movie more interesting!

Picnic at Hanging Rock was pretty good as a film. I general I find films are rarely as good as the novels they are based on. What you've got to keep in mind is the word "based".

Agree that as a general rule the film is never up to the book, always try to read the book before seeing the movie.

I agree, I went to see The Book Thief I was so glad that I had read the book first, the shame is that people think that there is no need to read the book after seeing the movie, a shame indeed.

And it's one way traffic. Just about the entire canon of English literature has been plundered for movies (and TV shows), but how many novels have been based on movies?

The other day I saw this novelisation of a video game: Total War Rome: Destroy Carthage. A few others come to mind.

There have been a couple, but I can't bring them to mind right now. What stands out in my mind is that they held off on the movie release while the book was being written. The book then helped promote the movie, and when the movie was a success, then the book enjoyed another stint on the bestseller list. That was not too many years ago.
