It was nice to make a significant impact on my planned reading of Horatio Alger, Jules Verne, and Henry Rider Haggard.

On my website, RootsTwigger.Com, I am trying to build some relationships between general history, my family ancestry, and the books I read. Of course, sometimes the reading subject is intentional but often quite accidental. For example, while working on my genealogy I found an ancestor who died in Iceland. Quite co-incidentally, my books 77. A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and 78. Eric Brighteyes are both set in Iceland.

I had occasion this month to review the filmography of my uncle who recently passed away. One of his credits, Mysterious Island (1951), is on my reading list (Jules Verne).

Number 83. Fair Margaret takes place in England and Spain during the reigns of King Henry VII of England and Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. It is the time of the Inquisition and is only a short time before Christopher Columbus comes to the Spanish sovereigns seeking support for his voyage to the Indies. Also, it is but a generation removed from when one of my ancestors served as armorer to Henry VIII.

I am going to tack on my July reads to 100 here.

91. Jess — Henry Rider Haggard
92. The Underground City, or, the Child of the Cavern — Jules Verne
93. Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea — Jules Verne
94. Blackbeard, Or, The Pirate of Roanoke — Benjamin Barker
I read this one because of my interest in Roanoke Colony. The only connection was the Roanoke River.
95. Mark Mason’s Victory The Trials and Triumphs of a Telegraph Boy — Horatio Alger
96. The Witchcraft Delusion in Colonial Connecticut (1647-1697) — John M. Taylor
I read this because I wanted to see what Cotton Mather had to say on the issue. From what I read here he seems to have been maligned in other histories. His advice seemed sound, as you would expect from a well educated man.
97. Nothing to Eat — Horatio Alger
OK, I read this because I am reading Horatio Alger. This is a poem, not a novel or story. The only reason to read it is to say you have perused Horatio Alger's works.
98. The Mysterious Island — Jules Verne
99. A Voyage in a Balloon (1852) — Jules Verne
100. Love Eternal – Henry Rider Haggard

The year is still young. Perhaps I can read another one hundred books. I think I better, since my library is expanding more than 200 books per year.
