Okay, summer is over (at least for the Northern Hemisphere) and we still have ROOTs to read! So as the kids go back to school and have their reading to do, let's read at the same time!
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached 8/12 of their goal. If anyone is 9/12 of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your personal goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ need to pickup the pace if we want to reach their goals.
Let's see the new Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.

I have moved the challengers who have yet to record a ROOT read to a separate list and their goals have been removed from the group goal.
When and if they record a ROOT, they will be moved back to the main tickers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add their tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread.
Please post your personal tickers in the ticker thread or post your monthly progress here at the end of the month so that I can gather the numbers in one thread as much as possible.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the totals for August. If anybody's number needs adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!

Our group goal for September is 3,452. We were only 102 short last month.

I know what you mean. I have a hard time sticking to a restricted list, which is why I didn't make a title list when I set my goal. (I just looked around the room, and said, OK- books, you know who you are... )
About a week ago, I kind of hit a mental wall, too. None of my ROOTs looked good to me, so I went to the library and picked up the next volume in my current favorite escapist series- and it did indeed 'jumpstart' my ROOT reading. I figure we are not supposed to make ourselves miserable with this!

>71 kittytm: Yes, I have also had a bit of trouble this year with my ROOT goal. My own books still appeal, but sometimes I just have to look at the library's online catalogue to feel the excitement of something different than what I see daily on my shelves.
My alternative is to actually dust my shelves--radical move-- which makes me pick my ROOTs up. I feel then like I'm in the library or a bookstore. Clearly that's why things are so dusty around here: I need to save the job for emergencies.

>76 ipsoivan: wow, 25? I think I've bought close to 20 at a time, but not quite as many as you did.

I did read one of my "new" books, and am back with my current ROOT, Fanny Crosby: the Hymn Writer. The subject is interesting, but the author kind of plods along. It's about a woman, blind from infancy, who winds up writing thousands of poems, many of them which became popular hymns that even non-Christians recognize. Amazing woman.

Finished ROOT #28 last night, I only need 8 more to reach my yearly goal. Updated all tickers.

I have finished my second ROOT for the month, and added the count to my ticker. I read Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. The edition I read was a reprint of the edition published in 1854 with a foreword by Steve McQueen, a discussion of African American classics by Henry Louis Gates, and an introduction by Ira Berlin. A summary of the incidents discussed in the chapter was given at the beginning of each chapter. I was amazed that Solomon Northup, a freeman who was kidnapped and sold into slavery, was able to live through such brutality as he describes in his account of his experiences. I have not seen the movie based on this book.

There will be no ROOTS from me for September, so if my ticker looks unchanged when you come to tot up the totals, Cheli, then that is actually correct. I have good intentions for October though! (probably helped by the fact that I'm starting the month with a holiday!).

I finished A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, an interesting story of him walking the Appalachian Trail. This leaves me with 4 books to complete my goal, which i will hopefully reach next month.

I have fallen woefully behind, I'm currently in the middle of a nonROOT that's taking longer than expected. Sigh. Next month will be better, I hope.

It looks like I am going to be behind this month (and maybe next month too), the builders are coming and I'm in the process of putting most of my 'to reads' into storage, plus I'm really not getting the time to read at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to catch up in November and December when, fingers crossed, everything should be done.

I'm finished for the month, YTD total is 61, with 8 ROOTS read in September. I'm getting there!

I doubt I'll get to any more ROOTs this month, but I read 3 in September for a grand total of 35. My own ticker is updated, but I haven't touched group tickers.

Last day, and I'm not currently reading a ROOT book, so my final count for September is 4 ROOTs, not too bad (for me!).

My ticker is updated, the main one I do not touch! :)

Addendum: I forgot I'd culled two ROOT books without reading (much), so technically I did 6 ROOTs for September. My ticker is updated.

OKAY! Both ROOTs finished putting me at 78 for the year, 18 over target. I have not updated group tickers because I wasn't sure when I'd stopped doing that. Will attempt to do better in October!

I joined this group over the summer, so set a small (compared to everyone else here!) goal for myself of 15 ROOTS. This morning I finished my own copy of Black Beauty, a book that haa been on my bookshelf for 22 years. He makes my 14th ROOT. One more to go!!!! :)

Hello again, everyone! :) I'm just gathering together my totals for September, and I think that despite reading two less ROOTs, I don't think it was too bad. :)

Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 8
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 69 (gulp!)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 39

Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 1
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 25 (not as bad as it could have been, I suppose! :))
