ohhh…oohhh the year is coming to a close…we have only 2 more months to complete our challenge!
I know that as the holidays approach our reading time begins to dwindle along the sunlight (northern hemisphere).
Let's see finish the year strong, confirmed in our desire to dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.

Here are the totals for October. If anybody's number needs adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!

Our group goal for November is 4,219.

>>7 streamsong: So far we are already ahead of last year. In 2013, we reach 74% of our group goal reading 3,948 books of the 5,417 goal. We've read 76% so far this year. With another 500 books in the last two months, we could surpass 4,000!

Currently 32% of our ROOTers have reached their goal, with another 33% within 10 books of reaching their goal. Last year 42% reached their goal so we could break that record as well.

LET'S FINISH UP STRONG!!!

#40 Travesties by Emma Tennant. This is an omnibus of The Bad Sister, Two Women of London and Faustine. A bit of a dud, I'm afraid. I've made it half way through The Bad Sister; I found it interesting at first, but when Jane's diary begins, I just found it a slog. It seemed so promising, then just fizzled out. Ah well, off the shelf and into the Goodwill bag.

I have just finished reading After the Fire: the Destruction of the Lancaster County Amish by Randy-Michael Testa which has been on my shelves since before I joined LibraryThing in November 2007. At the end of September, I had only 4 more books to read to meet my goal, and thought that would be easy. However, I got sidetracked in October, and ended up reading some library books instead of books from my shelves. I took a short, 3-session adult education course about the Amish in October, and found it disappointing since the lecturer did not talk much about current day Amish, and didn't answer our questions very well. Therefore, I read a classic, Rosanna of the Amish by Joseph W. Yoder, which tells the story of his mother who grew up Amish in the 19th century; this was a book from the public library. I then read Testa's book to try to learn more about present day Amish even though the book was published over 20 years ago.

A longer description of this book appears on my thread, https://www.librarything.com/topic/177830

Moonraker by F.Tennyson Jesse; {acquired 07/13/2009}; VMC; (4*),
The Knight of Cheerful Countenance by Molly Keane; {acquired 07/08/2011}; VMC; (5*) &
The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West; {acquired 08/24/2009}; VMC; (5*)

42majkia
Nov. 16, 2014, 8:06 am

For ROOTing purposes, if I start a book and don't finish it I count it. I don't on my yearly read stats but since I quit on it that means I'm not going to go back to it (except for very very rare occasions. So I don 't see why deciding you will never read a book and sending it off into vapor wouldn't count too.

I agree with fuzzi, each of us has to decide how we are doing things, but I think you have a good rationale and I'm for whichever decision you make.

43streamsong
Bearbeitet: Nov. 16, 2014, 10:51 am

>38 cyderry: Yup, I agree with fuzzi and majikia. Each challenge is personal. My own goal is books read - but I have no complaint if you want to choose a different goal.

ETA: Of COURSE I'd love to see another ROOTS challenge next year. I did much better this year than previous years, but have still managed to acquire more than I've read.

44benitastrnad
Nov. 16, 2014, 2:41 pm

If I start a book but don't finish it, I count it as a ROOT. I don't count a book that I have removed from my bookshelves because I decided I am never going to read that book. However, as already pointed out, each person's goal in the ROOT group is personal, so I think that the decision about what to include in the goal is also personal. As a member of this group it wouldn't matter to me either way.

As for continuing this group next year. I am favor of that as I use it as a way to keep track of all the older stuff I have read during the year. (I am not sure if my vote worked up above so included it in a post so you would be sure to get it.)

I just hit the join button for this challenge but probably won't start in deadly earnest until/if there is a 2015 ROOT challenge. Maybe I should be just watching for now? Is each persons number of books to read a personal goal? Not sure how this works yet.

Also, I just realized, I don't know anything about how you start a personal thread for this. Or do some people just list their reading on the main 2014 Root thread? I think there are an awful lot of techie maneuvers I don't know how to make.

50cyderry
Nov. 17, 2014, 6:38 pm

>>49 mhmr: Each person determines their own goal and what books constitute a ROOT for them. For instance, for me, my ROOTS are ARDs (Antique reading Devices = paper books), e-books, and audiobooks that I've had in my possession since 2013. I also count Early Reviewer and Advanced Review Copies that I received in he current year since they need to be read right away.

Other people only count paper books. Depends on what you want to count.

Each person sets their goal and then I add them all up and we have a group goal. We cheer everyone along.

Mission accomplished!! I just finished my 36th ROOT of the year, which was my goal.

The book that did it for me was a nice pb copy of A Presumption of Death by Jill Paton Walsh and Dorothy L. Sayers, which is the second book in the continuation of the Lord Peter Wimsey series.

Hopefully, I can pile on to this total.

I discovered that, for one upcoming book, I found that I actually own two copies (yes, this sometimes happens even with LT). I say that one ought to count as two, if I finish it.

>66 Robertgreaves: It was very interesting. As is often the case with edited academic volumes, some chapters were more interesting and better written than others, but overall it gave an interesting (and somewhat depressing) overview of the state of play in the mid 00s. It looked at issues from homophobic violence to media representation. Worth a read, although it was a pain to get hold of (I eventually had to contact the publisher, the Peace Institute in Ljubljana, and buy it direct from them).

I have two books for November, bringing my total to 19 read for a goal of 15. I have not changed the ticker. Maybe I can make 20 roots for the year.

I've been flying through my ROOTs this month, but I've also found a new fascinating diversion: Sum-Doku Puzzles!!!! lol! ;)

I'm kind of alternating between reading my ROOTs, and doing Sum-Doku. On the ROOT front, I finished my first ROOT in November on Thursday, November 6th and my sixth ROOT on Sunday, November 23rd. I'm hoping to be able to read four more ROOTs before the end of the month! :)

I just finished reading The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin about the January 12, 1888 Midwest blizzard which took the lives of numerous children, many of whom were returning from school. The book focuses on the stories of several families and young teachers. Unfortunately, too much of the book is devoted to scientific explanations -- both of weather conditions and how they occur, and the process of people being frozen to death. The politics concerning late 19th century weather forecasting is also discussed.

I have had this book on my shelves since before I joined LibraryThing in November 2007.

I'm about to finish my 75th ROOT this month, The Falls. I just can't seem to get enough of Mr. Rebus lately.

I set my goal for the year at 75, but I will of course continue to contribrute to our group goal next month as well. All of the holiday reads I've planned for December are ROOTs.

Hello again, everyone! :) I know that I'm late with my gathering of my November totals, but I managed to read only one less ROOT than my projected goal of ten ROOTs for this month. I also managed to only read one less ROOT this November in relation to last November, so I'm thrilled to have maintained my totals! :)

In keeping with the group theme, here are my November totals:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 5
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 4
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 1
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 6 (not too bad!)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 17
Leaves Swept Up: stands for books that were purged: 1

I have to apologize to all those who reached their goals in November because I didn't get to each of you to offer my congratulations. I've been very busy with home renovations (my bathroom is done!), Christmas for my grandchildren that I celebrated with at Thanksgiving, and of course there were a few Mom snafus that had to be handled.

Now it's time to finish out the year.

The December thread is up.

Hi there, everyone! :) I know that I'm horribly late with my gathering of my November totals, but I noticed that I actually read three less ROOTs this November than last November :( I know that I've met, and exceeded my goal of 48 ROOTs read for 2014, but I was sort of hoping to do so much better than it appears I actually did. Oh well, I still have one more month to go, so here's hoping!:

In keeping with the group theme, here are my November totals:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 2
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 7 (not too bad!)
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 2
