I've been working recently to clean up Maxfield Parrish's page, and getting all the books in order which are written about him.

I want to see all his covers in one place, and this is my solution, to do it in a thread.

Here's hoping the picture issues are cured today.

The Arabian Knights

(original cover, I think)

others

I have to share one of the inside illustrations. It is remarkable how the piercing light in a dark cave is rendered:

Mother Goose in Prose

the original, found off-site

BTW, this is a fun read. You get to hear "the rest of the story."

A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales

interestingly, Parrish is not on the list of renowned illustrators who worked on the books when they were published seperately.

Very nice! Thanks for taking the time to work on this illustrator's page, AND posting the covers for us.

>8 2wonderY: the cheapest on ebay is $99.00!

I did find a bunch of reproductions printed within the last decade or so. If that would work for you, check out bookfinder.com, and use "wharton parrish" as the author search terms.

There have been many art books published featuring Parrish.

The authors with only a single title are
Margaret E. Wagner

Lois Harris

Paul W. Skeeters

Carrie Brown, whose title, Maxfield Parrish: Machinist, Artisan, Artist was a 1995- 1996 exhibit catalog of the American Precision Museum, is available online. I've added the link in the book description block.

Coy Ludwig

is the title I duplicated this week at the sale.

Sylvia Yount

Jack W. Jacobsen, who's book Maxfield Parrish: The Man Behind the Make-Believe is 614 pages and is reviewed on Amazon as boring! Cover has no illustrations.

And
Les Allen Ferry wrote a 50 page monograph with photos and prints for the Plainfield Historical Society titled The make believe world of Sue Lewin. Sue Lewin was one of Parrish's primary models.

I was wondering if he used some photographs in those illustrations. He sorta did, tracing from a photograph. The models looked too real..

>13 2wonderY: The last pictured title in the post is a catalogue from an exhibition of Parrish's work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, must have been in about 1999 I think. I was lucky enough to go to the exhibit which was as wonderful as you would expect. I own the book, although I had to special order it as the first print run sold out and the Academy was having more printed.

Philadelphia is also home to the only mosaic made by Tiffany, which is based on a Parrish scene. You can see it in the Curtis building next to Independence Mall in the historical district.
Here's a little more information

Wow! You got to see the original paintings? Please expand on that just a bit.

The author who has been most prolific concerning Parrish is Alma Gilbert also known as Alma Gilbert-Smith. She established three museums in Vermont and New Hampshire, is THE person to go to to buy or sell Parrish originals, has put exhibits together for other museums and has been documenting the other artists, particularly the women of the Cornish Art Colony. I see from her homepage, she is moving into autobiographical fiction - she's written a mystery about a stolen Parrish painting.

The title I find most intriguing isThe Mechanic Who Loved To Paint: The OTHER Side of Maxfield Parrish.

2wonderY this is wonderful...a thread of book covers. So satisfying to see them all together in one place with no random print-on-demand generics to spoil things!!!

>20 SaintSunniva: I know!! That's one of the few things that grate on me here at LT. The old series books aren't respectibly represented on their page because of those UGLY POD covers.

>19 2wonderY:, I just looked at Amazon to see the book The Mechanic Who Loved to Paint: the Other Side of Maxfield Parrish as the only copy on LT does not have a review. Anyway, there was one review, of one star. "The entire contents could easily be reduced to about three pages with no appreciable loss. "

But it does sound interesting, even so.

>8 2wonderY: 2wondery: For any old book it is always helpful to look on ABE Books as well. I did find the Italian Villa title but they are probably too new. However, I didn't have much time to browse properly so it may just be worth your while to look them up. Hope this helps, if not for this search, perhaps a future one. :)

Interesting that this thread woke up. I just ordered several Alma Gilbert titles. I shop at half.com. I find they have the same good prices as AbeBooks, and I'm very happy with their payment and inquiry systems.

Got a pristine copy of A Place of Beauty: The Artists and Gardens of the Cornish Colony

Gardens, old photos, Maxfield Parrish art and his associates. What is not to like? It's a beautiful book

The other title I splurged on (no more wedding expenses) is Parrish and Photography.

Alma Gilbert does seem exploitative of her position, but the books she offers are beautiful. This one is slim, but you get side by side looks at original models and the finished paintings as well as some in between sketches.

A couple of beauties, especially the first, with its multitude of tints that one might have thought didn't complement each other, but they do. And always that expressive, but also reserved, quality.
