Hello fellow GLBT library folks!

We're in the early stages of defining a collection policy for our library. Up until recently, our collection policy has essentially been, "Is it GLBT related? We'll take it!" We'd like to write a better, more specific collection policy, that we can point both volunteers and patrons towards when they have questions about books in our collection. Do any other similar libraries have collection policies that they'd be willing to let us read? If you don't have a formal collection policy, what are the guidelines you use for deciding which items to include in your library?

Also, while I'm asking questions, my supervisor wanted me to ask about similar libraries' policies for dealing with severely overdue books. We have a number of books in our system that were checked out a number of years ago. We've pretty much accepted that we're never going to see these books again. Any other libraries have this problem? How do you handle it?

Thanks for your time!

Hello from Indianapolis. Here also we accept books on being glbt related. In some older material that content can be subliminal but we do watch out for that . As a rule of thumb( tho still potentially nebulous) at least 10% must be glbt related. We try to "hound" or even shame people into returning material by reminding then ( repeatedly) that failure to return material amounts to stealing from the whole community. If that doesn't work, the item is deleted from the data base as stolen and the borrower is posted to our 'wall of shame" as a thief never to be allowed to borrow again.
