Dr. Swift, A Wonderful Healer States Here Is Health Through The Magic Power of Fine Gentle Massage. His home treatment, which cures the patient in the privacy of their own home without the knowledge of any one, is creating a profound sensation because it is curing the hopeless and those pronounced incurable. For All Disease Of The Mid-Quarters From Neck To Knee. (words on poster)

I bought the coolest book today at work: The Art of Sensual Massage. (That's where the above picture came from.) It's been lurking around in our downstair's bookdrop area (it's the first thing you see when you walk in the room! lol), so I finally picked it up and was just cracking up over the pictures. They're very graphic and very 70's (ie, the hippies loooved their body hair). My coworkers got a good kick out of too. Fun stuff. :)

ETA: Sorry the picture's crooked. It bugs the hell out of my OCD side. :)

The cover is hilarious!! I thought a sensual massage started like a normal one and went...a bit further than a regular one. That guy is getting right down to business, it seems.

Actually, this is the cover:

though I'm sure the updated version (this pic) has everyone super buff, breast augmented, and waxed. :/

The picture in >1 saraslibrary: is in the back of the book. It has a whole section of older methods of massage, including one photo in which it looks like two women are punching another woman in the back. This latter woman is hanging by her hands, but it almost looks like the beginnings of a s/m scene. It's from a 1918 book called Massage and Medical Gymnastics. (Where do they come up with these titles?)

But yeah, to respond to your message, he does get right down to business, doesn't he? XD I love it.

ETA: I was going to scan the punching massage photo, but the copier's taken right now, and I seriously need to get back to work. Slacker Sara. :)

Ah, well, that cover is pretty horrifying too. o.o

In response to your message on the last thread, no, I'm not doing SantaThing because I don't have the cash to spend. The reason I did it a few years ago was because when Nora was doing SantaThing she would "sponsor" a random person, and I was the lucky winner a couple years ago. :)

I still think librarians are out to get me! Clearly they are nefarious beings from another planet, just think of the things they would do to me if I let my guard down! Oh dear.

5saraslibrary
Nov. 26, 2014, 10:37 pm

You should see the inside. Peni everywhere! o.o

Oh, bummer. :( How do you "sponsor" someone? Is it like giving the cash in someone else's name? Would you mind if I did that for you?

Naw, I don't think it's the librarians, just everyone else. Your mailman...your dentist...your dog. ;)

Happy new thread!

11LauraBrook
Nov. 28, 2014, 11:38 am

Hah! Sara, I totally know that book! There was a copy of it upstairs at my massage school in the waiting area of our massage clinic. Thankfully, no one ever looked at the books in our book cases except for us therapists while we were eating lunch or something. Yeah. That book is very 70's, and not necessarily in a good way. There was another one, whose name escapes me, that was even more frank with the descriptions and pictures. It was good for a laugh for us.

But...yikes. It's books like that that scare me - if some dude (assumption, but an accurate one in my experience) reads or even skims one of these and then makes an appointment for a massage, it will NOT end well for him. There are so many creeps out there it's a little disturbing. :/

That picture reminds me - have you seen the movie "Hysteria"? Totally about the invention of the vibrator!

>8 Ape: Looking back at that post, I can see where all the peni inside would get confusing. :D *trying not to imagine a giant cave with peni everywhere* Damn you, Freud!

I will have to ask Nora, the Queen of Magic then. ;)

>9 PaulCranswick: Well, maybe that's a good thing if she finds it. ;)

Happy belated Thanksgiving to you, too, and have a fun weekend! *throws The Art of Sensual Massage over Paul's head and to SWMBO*

>10 Kassilem: Thank you, Melissa! :)

>11 LauraBrook: LOL! The weird thing is, is when I picked it up, I thought, "Hey, Laura would get a kick out of this!" I'm so glad you already know it. :) I don't know anyone who can keep a straight face while flipping through the book. Even the models have to be laughing at themselves when they see the photos on paper.

I think most people think massage therapy is just a fancy word for "adult services." Kind of like bikini baristas, though, to be honest, we've had a lot in my neighborhood that are basically drive-thru brothels. Hint: drive-thru liquor stores and drive-thru brothels are really bad business investments. ;)

OMG! That is too freaky. :o When I was showing some of my coworkers The Art of Sensual Massage, one of them recommended Hysteria to me, which I promptly checked out (luckily, we had two copies in). It's still in my work bag, but hopefully I'll get it watched this week. :)

>12 MickyFine: Thanks, Micky! :) LOL! Only on my thread, where I have a man with his hand up a woman's skirt and a massage book at the top, could it be considered tame. ;)

>13 Ape: Ha! You could always try your local bikini baristas. (Do they have those in Ohio Land?)

>14 LauraBrook: For some reason, disappointing massages reminds of when Chelsea Handler got a bad massage in Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea and the woman, who didn't speak English very well, thought Chelsea was trying to get a massage with a "happy ending." Funny stuff, if you've ever read that book. :)

>15 Ape: You could always try a male masseuse. ;)

I'm convinced "Sexual innuendo" is a naughty reference, because I can't read it anymore without reading "Sex in-your-end-o." Yeah, that's plumbing the depths of perversity/immaturity there, it's becoming totally pathetic. No wonder Micky is embarrassed to be seen with us in public.

From How to Be a Person by Lindy West, et al., a book I just checked out today, about where I live (which is eerily accurate!):

The Pacific Northwest

Mascot: A dude named Jeff (he has a band).

Motto: "Hey, you should check out my band."

Main Attractions: Kurt Cobain's house (Seattle), Bruce Lee's grave (Seattle), Crater Lake (Oregon), Space Needle (Seattle), whales (the ocean), that one vegan place with the kale chips (Portland).

This is that damp, green place up in the corner. The Pacific Northwest is the nation's leading exporter of trees, airplanes, vegans, software, serial killers, suicide bridges, polar fleece, octopus attacks, coffee-related smugness, bands, sad white people, and white people in bands, and owls. All the stereotypes about the Pacific Northwest are both true and untrue. You will hear that it rains a lot--it does, but it rains more in Miami. You will hear that the people are passive-aggressive and cold--some are, but others aren't, because THAT'S HOW PEOPLE WORK. You will hear that everyone is always drinking a latte--FALSE, nobody drinks lattes. Normal people drink Americanos. You will hear that Washington and Oregon are both run by puppet governments controlled by Sasquatch. Yeah, that's actually true. Oregon has no sales tax. Washington has Dave Matthews. The eastern halves of both states are exact replicas of Wyoming.

I hate to say it, but about 90% of this is true! :D Damn vegans. :P And all hail Sasquatch! (ETA: Love the back cover: "You Will Die Without This Book.")

137Ape

Actually, I'm not thinking green fuzz at all. *googles fungus on testicle* Hmm, nope, nothing remotely green. Oh, I take that back. Here's a sheep nipple with a funal infection. I know it's different because we're the ones who actually see the things on shelves/carts/being checked in on a regular basis, but still! And some of the older folks who work with me treat me and the other pages like we're not even there, and talk down to/about us. It makes me want to slap them across the face and say "HEY! Secret handshakes, outfits, weapons--all that atuff. ;) Oh, I know a lot of my coworkers are disgruntled with how much the librarians/managers make, and they basically do the exact work a clerk does! So why should they make 4-5 x's more when they're a lot more clueless than we, the pages, are, which is pretty darn scary. Just be glad they're not doctors! :D You may use your soapbox anytime! Please do! I totally agree with you. I can think of a couple higher-ups who're constantly talking down to the pages, like we're simple-minded idiots (ok, so I can admit I do fit into this category, but still, being nice to the lower-downs never hurt anyone). I'm sorry, but one of my fellow pages is working on her library degree, so she's far from "simple-minded." Several others have razor-sharp memories and can rattle off information better than any librarian. I don't like the classism either, but it's definitely there. LOL, I'll put my soapbox away now, too. ;) Besides, a little somebody has something to say to you:

I know, I love that gif, too. I've seen it several times, but only til now did it seem appropriate to put it on my thread. When did appropriateness ever stop me from posting something, huh? ;) As for the t-shirt, maybe Zazzle might have a t-shirt like that. Or I'm sure there are DIY t-shirt sites where you could make it. There is the whole copyright thing, but phbbbbt, I say to that. Harry Potter's made plenty of money.

Yes, and sadly the Sara and Stephen show is all volunteer work. We never get paid. :( Why thank you! We shall carry on...and on...to the funny farm! ;) Hmmm, I wonder if they have pandas. Wonderfully furry pandas. :)

>142 Ape: I know you would, but you really shouldn't. You make my brain sad when you say that, because I can totally relate. :*( I have no self-respect either, and every day I'm like, "Why am I here? There are hundreds of other applicants that could--and would!-- do a better job than I'm currently doing." But I think they're too lazy to fire me. It'd be too much paperwork for them.

Oh, yeah, it's a sheep nipple. It wasn't just me taking picture of my fungus-y nipples. :P I'm trying to find the animal site it was on, but I can't find. Go figure why it popped up when I was googling testicle fungus. *shrugs*

Moldy google search results are so weird. Like this one: quick, tell me what's the name of the author! (And what did that pic have to do with mold? You tell me.) The All-Rounder

Your responses showed you fitting into three different personalities:

1) Exacting Reader: You love books but you rarely have as much time to read as you'd like - so you're very particular about the books you choose.

2) Serial Reader: Once you discover a favorite writer you tend to stick with him/her through thick and thin and eagerly await the next in the series.

3) Eclectic Reader: You read for entertainment but also to expand your mind. You're open to new ideas and new writers, and are not wedded to a particular genre or limited range of authors.

>176 RosyLibrarian: I would've thought the same thing. :) I think most librarians fall into the eclectic category or exacting category.

>177 LauraBrook: Two eclectic readers? Cool! :) I checked out their site briefly (I'd never heard of them either), but I wasn't too won over. I tried their "fun" areas, like the polls and read-alikes and that didn't help at all. They didn't even have some of my favorite writers. :( But then I saw the small print near the bottom: "Non-members are limited to two results" (for the author read-alikes). So maybe you have to be a member to get the most out of it. *shrugs* Happy browsing! :)

I got "eclectic reader" too. I have plenty of time to read what I want, so I obviously wasn't going to get that one, and I'm too scatter-brained with my reading to focus on single authors, with a few exceptions. :)

Aahhh, I'm surrounded by eclectic readers! :P I think eclectic really means intellectual, while an all-rounder is indecisive about his/her reading (or maybe just has a split personality ;). I'm really curious what someone with all four would equal....

I was underwhelmed with the site too, Sara. I'm also on Shelfari (though I haven't been able to log in for months), Riffle, goodreads, and BookLikes. I think that's probably enough bookish web things, hey?!? ;)

I've often wondered about Christmas Story 2 and long suspected that it was a stinker. Thanks for taking the hit for me! Have you watched the fan "making of" movie where they go back and visit the sites in Ohio? I think it came out a year or two ago.

>183 LauraBrook: I think I have a Shelfari account, too. Has their site been down? Is that why you haven't been able to log in? I haven't been over there in...years? I don't know. I've never heard of Riffle, but I'll check it out. I do have a GoodReads account, but I wasn't able to upload my books (apparently I have too many or something), so I don't use GR other than to check out their lists. I've never heard of BookLikes either, so that'll be another one I'll visit next. Thanks! :) And yes, that's probably enough bookish web things. ;) Though I wouldn't be surprised if there are more book sites out there.

Yeah, A Christmas Story 2 is a stinker (I think it got 3.5/10 stars on IMDb), but I did laugh at a few parts. Still, I wouldn't recommend it. And you're welcome for taking the hit for you. Anytime. ;) No, I've never seen the "making of" movie. Is it on YouTube or an actual movie? I really love the original A Christmas Story (in fact, I just finished rewatching it tonight for my annual Christmas movie-a-thon), and would definitely love to see anything related to it. Oh, and speaking of stinker movies, I heard from a coworker that Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever was a bomb. :*( I love Grumpy Cat, so I'll probably still watch it if/when it comes out on DVD. Have you seen that one? I think it was on Lifetime this month.

>184 RosyLibrarian: LOL! I think we all have a bit of scatter-brained and non-committal reading habits in us. I know I can raise my hand to those two things. ;)

189LauraBrook
Dez. 19, 2014, 11:30 am

>185 saraslibrary: No, I haven't seen that making-of version yet. Oh wait, it was a fan movie, and it's called "Road Trip for Ralphie". They go and visit the filming locations, walk down the street where Scott Farkus beats up Ralph, etc. I'm going to try and get my hands on a copy somehow.

I love Grumpy Cat too, so I'll rent it when it comes out on DVD. I usually like those innocuous kind of easy movies. And there's a soundtrack for it too, but I don't know if it's original stuff from the movie (unlikely) or a "grumpy" collection of songs. Eh.

I forgot all about that Dracula show! I liked the first few episodes I saw, and then they got deleted in my DVR so I never saw the rest of it. Will have to hunt that down at work.

190saraslibrary
Dez. 19, 2014, 4:14 pm

>188 Ape: Ha! :P Sure, if you know what the fourth one is.

>189 LauraBrook: Thanks for the title. I've never heard of "Road Trip for Ralphie" (it's only listed in the trivia section of A Christmas Story on IMDb, not even on its own page; go figure), but I did see it listed on Amazon. That DVD cover... :D It looks like they're licking a stripper's pole. But anywho, good luck finding a cheap copy! :)

Yeah, I'm on hold for the Grumpy Cat soundtrack. Going by the Amazon page, it's original stuff from the movie with two "new" songs. Eh, is what I say to all, too. But my coworker showed me her hold copy this week, and it came with a bumper sticker and poster (hers now probably, ha!).

I don't have cable or "extra" channels other than PBS, a gazillion God channels, & Fox, so I'm so glad when our library orders TV series like Dracula. I was just checking out when season 2 would be coming out (especially since I wanted to know what would happen to certain characters, like Lucy), but apparently it was cancelled. Honestly, I'm not too surprised. The series is good, but I expected it to be a little more...I don't know, bloodier? Some parts of it I was completely bored with (like the business aspect of it), but the rest was pretty good--the vampire hunting, romance drama, revenge-seeking, etc. I hope you like it if/when you can find a copy at work. :) It's pretty watchable, not only because of Jonathan Rhys Meyers but other actors like Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
