Hello everyone!

I ROOTed (actually, I BOMBed) a few years ago but unfortunately went away when the ROOT challenge wasn't working with my style of reading. However, I've been lingering every since and have been trying to come up with a reason to come back.

Now, I'm moving to Japan this January so my reading TBR is going to be turned upside down. I can only bring so many books to Japan with me so I will basically be building a book TBR from scratch. So nothing really to ROOT. But I already have a manga TBR waiting for me in Japan that has about 50 manga on it. So that will be what I'm tackling because I want to make sure I'm reading and not just accumulating. (ETA: The books I brought with me and that are in my inTokyo TBR pile will be counting as ROOTs so that this thread is not just manga-related.)

Here's to reading at least 50 manga in the new year!

Goal reached! 55 books/manga out of a goal of 50!

Non-Manga ROOTS read in 2015:
1) Hiroo Onoda : No Surrender
2) Charles Dickens : Great Expectations
3) Amelie Nothomb : Une Forme de Vie (Life Form)
4) Akira Yoshimura : Un spécimen transparent : Suivi de Voyage vers les étoiles
5) Otsuichi : GOTH 夜の章
6)Zola : Pot-Bouille

TBR Pile at the end of the month:
Month: Books Manga
Jan: 28, 37
Feb: 28, 59
Mar: 28, 53
Apr: 29, 57
May: 29, 54
June: 29, 51
July: 29, 52
Aug: 29, 49
Sept: 28, 49
Oct: 27, 46
Nov: 27, 55
Dec: 27, 54

Since I'm moving to Japan at the end of this month and I'm only supposed to bring what I can fit in my suitcases, I wasn't supposed to get any books in France. But I really couldn't resist as French bookstores just have the power of making me want to read ALL the Books, ALL the Time! So I ended up coming home with the following:

1) Akira Mizubayashi : Une langue venue dailleurs
2) René Fregni : Tu tomberas avec la nuit
3) Victor Hugo : Han d'Islande
9) Patrick Modiano : Dora Bruder

I also acquired a comic based on Hokusai's life as I went to the beautiful expo on Hokusai's work at the Grand Palais. Still not sure what I'm going to do with all these books before I leave since I definitely won't have the time to read them all in my remaining 3 weeks in the US. Having to choose which few books make the trip in my suitcase to Japan is going to be so hard!

Thank you everyone for the wellwishes. Since I won't actually be reviewing the manga individually and I don't want to bore you with manga talk, there will be mention of books as well on this thread. ROOT books will be any books acquired before 2015. This will help me read those books that are in Tokyo already waiting for me and the books I will be bringing with me. Once I'm in Tokyo I'll list the books that are on my Tokyo TBR pile.

And so far this year I've read two manga from the series Naruto (in French).

I also finished my first book of the year and nonfiction No Surrender by Hiroo Onoda. It is Onoda's autobiography as he writes about his time in the Philippines as a Japanese soldier. But not any soldier. A soldier who didn't believe WWII was over so he continued to fight as a guerilla for 30 years post the end of the war. Very engrossing read!

So, THREE ROOTS so far!

For how long will you stay in Japan. Permanently?

And Yeah for 3 ROOTS!

Jan. 13, 2015, 4:41 pm

I want to do minimum 3-5 years, ideally staying to see the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. However, I will be letting my career path determine what happens next.

And now I'm on to 4 roots!

I have finished Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I had read A Tale of Two Cities in high school but have never read anything else by him despite having liked him. For some reason in December it just felt like the moment to finally pick him back up again so here we are and I really enjoyed the book.

3-5 years. That is a long time. But I guess it's a challenge to see how long you can and want to stay. Good luck!

Well, living and working in Japan is a dream of mine so I want to be able to stay as long as possible. But if my career had to take me away, I would hope I could have at least stayed 3-5 years. If that explains it better.

Okay, Following a dream is very good! That will make it so much more fun. Now i understand what makes you move over there.

I have finished my 5th and 6th ROOTs, one being a novel and the other a manga.

The manga I read was Hokusai by Shotaro Ishinomori. This was purchased this past December due to having see the fantastic Hokusai exhibit at the Grand Palais. It kept me entertained but I wouldn't say it was entertaining; just something to read during my downtime and to look at the drawings.

Then today I read Une Forme de Vie by Amelie Nothomb. Her books don't take more than two hours to read and always provide a breath of fresh air to the day. Entering the Nothomb world is like jumping down the rabbit hole as you get taken in, but like all her books lately, as soon as you leave you really don't remember much about the world you just left. So a good read but not as memorable as her works earlier in her career.

In terms of removing books from my TBR pile, the Hokusai is from 2014 and the Nothomb is from 2010.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.
I arrived yesterday to Tokyo and today I got the keys to my apartment. (Or rather, my room as I share the rest with roommates.) I somehow managed to lug around two huge suitcases and a bag full of 20 books on my shoulders around the Tokyo subway system without dying and giving up. (So many awkward escalators!) My books got a little tattered unfortunately as the TSA did a check on my suitcases and weren't very good about not making a mess. You might say these are two very good reasons for getting a Kindle or something of the like but I'm still going to suffer through carrying books with me.

As I promised in a previous thread, here is my official in Tokyo TBR!

Books brought with me:
Alexandre Dumas : Vingt Ans apres
Jules Verne : Voyage au centre de la terre
Jules Verne : Vingt mille lieues sous les mers
Alain-Fournier : Le grand Meaulnes
Akira Mizubayashi : Une langue venue dailleurs
Emile Zola : Pot-bouille
Erich-Maria Remarque : Arc de Triomphe
Honore de Balzac : Le Pere Goriot
Steinbeck : The Grapes of Wrath
Akimitsu Takagi : The Tattoo Murder Case
Kobo Abe : The Ark Sakura
Endo : Scandal
Alan Booth : Looking for the Lost
Shohei Ooka : Taken Captive

Books already waiting for me here:
Kenzaburo Oe : A Quiet Life
Troyat : La tete sur les epaules
Victor Hugo : Quatrevingt-treize
村上 春樹 : 女のいない男たち (His latest short story collection)
久美 沙織 : いつか海に行ったね
遠藤 周作 : 深い河 (Shusaku Endo : Deep River)
乙一 : 暗いところで待ち合わせ
乙一 : ZOO1
吉本 ばなな : ハチ公の最後の恋人 (Banana Yoshimoto)

These are the books I want to try to clear before I start buying a massive amount of books like I have set up in the US.

I'm currently doing more reading of Japanese food and pottery blogs as I adjust to having to cook a new cuisine. So far it has been really fun but I'm daunted by the amount of things I want to eat (and thus cook) right now. I'm already imagining myself cooking the foods that best suit the season and then pulling out my plates and bowls that best suit the season so as to create a beautiful Japanese meal.

.... so far I've made miso soup. :P

(But it was highly successful! And entirely made from scratch!)

In any case, my reading is currently on the backburner so I've only managed to read one comic so far in February: オレンジ楽園. At least this one was on and off the pile in less than a month. That's what I'm aiming for.

Mayday mayday!

Yesterday I walked into BookOff which is a famous used book store chain that sells most comics at 108 yen apiece which is about one dollar each. So it's hard to go into that store without coming out with something. I walked in just to get one or two standalone comics to read but when I walked past one section of the store, I was doomed. BookOff will often seal an entire series in one package and sell it as a whole with a slight discount so it's cheaper than buying the books individually. So that's when I saw the series ホイッスル (Whistle), a soccer manga I've been wanting to read for a while. There it was, just waiting for me, 2000 yen for 24 books which came out to about 83 yen a book. With the exchange rate that comes out to 72 cents a book! I just.... couldn't refuse. I ended up walking out with the entire series.

I blame the fact that all the manga on my TBR are still at my host family's house and not my apartment so I have no access to those just yet. So yeah, I needed this series to read while I wait for my other manga. Yep, that's my excuse; not my lack of willpower at all.

Oh dear. Another 24 books to the pile.

Speaking of which, today I finished reading クリスタル前奏曲 so now I can start reading the series.

I had an hour to kill before my English lesson (I enjoy teaching English conversation on Sundays) so I stepped into a book shop next to the coffee shop I was supposed to meet at. It was my first time in this particular shop and I was certain there was nothing I was going to buy since all the books looked new so I certainly wasn't going to buy them at the new price. But nope, it turns out they were used book prices so I ended up leaving with two comics: 僕だけがいない街 1, and コンビニの清水.

I bought the latter because the cover was on point and I could tell it was going to be hilarious. Me cracking up after reading just the first pages on the train proved me right so I'm exciting to sit down and read this one. Plus I like experimenting with these one-shot comics. You get to try a new artist and support his work (although I do realize I bought the book used... oops) but don't have to commit to a 20+ volume series. Also these one-shot comics are a lot more experimental which is great.

But seriously, the cover art! The back cover is genius as well.

The second book I got was the first volume of a fairly new series. I had seen recommendations for it online so I thought I would try it out. Won't read this right away but still eager to get to it.

In the meantime I've read 3 volumes of the Whistle soccer series so at least I'm starting to go through that series relatively quickly.

Mid-month update.

I've read two more volumes of Whistle, volumes 5 and 6. I also read the first volume of 僕だけがいない街 which took me just a little bit to get into as I couldn't get the pacing right on the main character's internal monologue. But once I started reading out loud it all fell into place.

Thus I purchased the second book in the series at the bookstore yesterday.

Managed to only buy 1 comic and read 7 although I'm sure I could have read more. Last week I didn't read anything and this week is looking like a no-reading week as well as my social life is getting crazier (a good thing!) so I'm constantly out and about meeting people.

Also, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom so I'm running all over Tokyo trying to see all the different areas I can and taking hundreds and hundreds of pictures. It's such a wonderful and majestic feeling to look upon all the varieties of cherry trees. Some have sparsely spaced blossoms, others are bundled and look like snow, some are white, some are pink, others hang down like wisteria while others have huge trunks and tower into the sky. It's been wonderful.

I'm in a really magic place right now and my happiness level is at an all time high.

Thank you everyone for the wonderfully nice comments. Unfortunately I wasn't able to reply as running around hunting sakura managed to land me a cold what with the constantly changing temperatures. (Yesterday felt like winter again.) So since last week I've been in this strange sleepy state where it's been taking a lot of focus just to get through work, though not without making mistakes, of course. Lots of stupid little mistakes and blunders. Anyway, I'm about 90% recovered starting today so I thought I'd post three of my sakura pictures. In ROOTing news, I'm finally back on the map with 2 ROOTs (ホイッスル 10-11) after having been sick for about 2 weeks which led to not being able to read. But I'm on track for what seems to be a rate of 7 manga per month which feels good. My TBR pile is dwindling quickly and I'm managing to wait before I invest in (and buy) another series.

Eventually I need to shift over to reading some novels again in Japanese so I can push my reading level up but for now I continue to entertain myself with manga.

Bearbeitet: Apr. 24, 2015, 4:33 am

So I made three manga purchases this weekend.

First I bought the third volume of 僕だけがいない街 which is a suspense story about a guy who can change the outcome of events by jumping back in time right before an incident happens. One night though someone close to him is murdered and he has been framed for the incident. He uses his power to try and go back to right before the murder but finds himself jumping back all the way to his childhood where he believes he's being "requested" to save some old friends of him from the serial kidnapper/murderer who haunted his neighborhood. The question remains if he can stop the kidnapper and will that change the future enough to save the latest victim from his present.

Only 5 volumes out so far on this one so since I'll be finished it soon that's why I decided to check out some new series.

The second manga I bought was purchased due to seeing a recommendation online and I liked the art and concept. It's called アイアムアヒーロー (I am a Hero) and is basically about a zombie apocalypse in Japan. I'm not too much of a zombie person but this looked like a perfect mix of humor with a great art style. (I'm expected comedy along the lines of the movie Zombieland which I found very well done.)

There are already 15 volumes to this series which I didn't realize when I bought the first volume (trying to avoid long series right now) but if the dialogue is as light as it seems in the first volume, I should be able to get through this quickly.

The last manga I bought was from browsing in the bookstore. It's called 重版出来! and was purchased on a pure whim as I couldn't even see the art as the volume was wrapped in plastic. But it seemed to have won a lot of welcome critiques and I thought it would be interested to read. I tend to like comics about real life and this is about the drama behind the comic industry, not just the artist, but the selling and production aspect as well. Company comics like this are pretty popular in Japan so I thought I'd dip my toes into the genre.

There are only 5 volumes to this series so far. Although once I got home I was able to open up the book and it's very text heavy and has quite a bit of vocabulary I don't know (yet) so we'll see how fast I can get through this.

Super looking forward to these though! I really need to start reading faster as there are just too many interesting books I want to get to!

So I stayed on my average of about 7 manga read in a month so that guarantees that my TBR pile goes down by a good batch. I did start one new series, アイアムアヒーロー, which led me to buy a lot more books in the series, but at the same time it reads so quickly that I've been buying them as I go.

I foresee either totally finished the series (or rather, catching up to its current volume) next month or at least getting close. Then I can read the rest of 僕だけがいない街 and then get back to reading ホイッスル. All super exciting stuff.

I did somehow manage to buy a book despite not being in a novel reading mood but I bought because it looked very simple, and was heavy in dialogue, so I figured that when I do get in the novel-reading mood, that book will probably be easy for me to get into and perhaps even stay with the novel reading theme.

In any case, Golden Week starts this week so from Saturday to Wednesday is holiday so I'm hoping to do some great sightseeing visiting flower gardens and perhaps relax and read.

Wow great job on your progress!
Although to me, rainy season sounds like a lovely prospect (living here in the desert, as I do), I understand most people don't enjoy it ;) Good luck w/ the rain and may your summer come fast!

June was not a reading month for me. Instead it was a month where all I felt like doing was watch tv and the Women's World Cup. I did manage to read one short little book -- the first book I read in about 4 months -- but that was still relatively forced and didn't change my desire to not read.

I did buy another book of short suspense stories by Otsuichi as I thought it'd be a good way to get back into reading and into reading Japanese novels. Still working on that though.

So I'm just going to keep riding these quiet waters until the next wave of reading inspiration comes.

Is it too early for a July summary? I haven't even touched a book this month so I feel like it's definitely not too early. Especially since for the rest of the week until Monday I will be out and about every day so I don't forsee any reading then.

I wonder when I'll feel like reading again. Maybe I can try and at least get one manga read next week to try to gain some forward momentum into August.

My roommate got me a bookshelf so now all my books that were in boxes, my closet and on top of my desk are now neatly arranged. I was hoping for some inspiration there but I actually feel overwhelmed now that I see all I have that I haven't read yet. I really didn't expect for that bookshelf to be fully filled on the first try! Ack!

Thanks to a two week readathon that happened during a spout of bad, depressing weather here in Tokyo (that continues: two weeks of rain and no sun) I was able to push myself into reading a little bit. While the reading is great, I'm hating this early end to summer especially since I haven't been able to go the beach once. To add salt to my wound, this weekend is supposed to be my last hurrah and last attempt at summer but it'll be raining the entire time. And this time I can't cancel 'cause it involves hotels and train tickets that already booked. I'm so sad. I actually went to bed at 9pm last night instead of the regular midnight just because of this stupid weather. In any case, three comics read in the last two weeks.

And here's another one with a Japanese title! And thank you for your continuous encouragement.

I finally was able to finish a book which was GOTH 夜の章 by Otsuichi, a collection of three short stories (that are available in translation) but not his strongest works that I've read.

Even though I continue to not really read, I am happy that I once again bought no additional books this month and that I had a short turnaround in reading Goth which I bought in June and have now finished so it is not lingering on the TBR pile.

However, looking at the few books I have in Japanese, I want to read none of them so I think it'll be healthy for me to buy one book that really excites me so I don't feel like I'm pushing myself to read just for the sake of reading. (Especially since books like Goth were purchased for just one dollar.)

Actually read an actual novel and then started on the nostalgic Sailor Moon series which I loved the cartoon as a kid but only knew up to a certain part of the plot. Now the plot I'm reading is all new to me!

And then suddenly she whizzes through volumes 17 through 22 of the manga Whistle and hits her goal of 50 for the year! But no, there's no stopping her. She'll keep going! Goooo her!

And that's the story of how I reached my goal of reading 50 manga volumes on November 10th!

To celebrate I bought 15 new manga today!
The complete set of ふしぎ遊戯 and the first 5 (out of 10) of Cat's Eye. Very exciting stuff! Also a little hint at what my TBR pile will look like for 2016's challenge.

It looks like this will be it for me and the rest of the month although I'll update this if another pops in. I joined a dating app recently so instead of reading at night I've been chit chatting on my phone. Fun but also very distracting!
