I am very excited about this challenge, and look forward to my fellow members' suggestions. I read mysteries, history, poetry, natural history--I could go on...

This may sound silly, but right now, I am in the mood for a good dog story! There's something about Christmas and dogs that just go together.

I work for the National Park Service as an administrative specialist.

Do you want a happy dog story, or can it be sad? There's always The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Not very festive, I'm afraid. There is also a great book called You are a Dog which isn't a fiction story at all, but which is adorable.

Thanks for your recommendations and Happy New Year to You! I went to your site and saw many of my favorites on your bookshelves--I have just started Cranford. Did you see the tv production of North and South? It was so well done. By the way, what is Bull Moose? And do you know about Thriftbooks.com? I have been buying books like crazy from them. They are usually very low-priced and offer free shipping.

Cranford is fantastic - I love Gaskell. I haven't seen the tv North and South yet, but it is on my Netflix queue. I just need time to see it!

Bull Moose is a local bookstore/record store/video store here in Portland that buys and sells new and used books, dvds, cds, etc. I usually dispose of my unwanted media there; they pay a decent price for them. I have not heard of thriftbooks, but I'm always looking for cheap places to buy books so thanks for the heads up!

My husband retired after 40 years with NPS, most of it as Administrative Officer at a variety of parks.
