I started reading Riding Lessons by Sara Gruen and the horse in the story is described as a brindled liver chestnut (basically a chestnut with white stripes). I thought, what the heck? but I've just done a little online research and there is such a color. There are also a few other unusual color patterns I'd never heard of (see http://www.equinecolor.com/unusual.html#brindle) like lacing and Bend Or spots (which I have seen on racehorses from time to time but I didn't know what they were).

The color this website calls "black silver" my sister has always called "chocolate palamino." A friend's grandfather had a pony that color when she was a kid.

Equine color genetics are fascinating!

Very interesting website. Thanks for providing a link.

Equine color genetics is much more interesting than I would have guessed. I particually enjoyed the dun and buckskin articles, as I had never quite figured out all the differences between the two. And I liked the information on grollo horses.
