UK James Herbert Award for Horror Writing shortlist announced

The shortlist for the James Herbert award for horror writing in UK and Ireland has been announced.

Troop, Nick Cutter (Headline)
Cuckoo Song, Frances Hardinge (Macmillan)
The Loney, Andrew Michael Hurley (Tartarus)
Bird Box, Josh Malerman (Voyager)
An English Ghost Story, Kim Newman (Titan)

I'm surprised there's a shortlist for an award anywhere that has several books I've read on it, so I'll be checking out the others.

>2 saraslibrary: thanks! Hard to say of the three I've read which is best, each has merits and flaws. Bird box stayed with me the longest, very creepy premise. Great debut. I know M R Carey has written other things under different names, but it was his first book I read and it was a great entry in the zombie genre.

Troop is a bit too horrific for me, the body horror puts me off and I've put it down for now. It's well written though.

>4 saraslibrary: From what I read it's meant to be for UK Irish writers but maybe just books published there? Nick Cutter is pen name of a Canadian writer and the book is set in Canada. The two I've read were nominees in goodread's choice award.

Nick Cutter's The Troop won the award this year.
