"Mr. White Sox," Cuban-American baseball star Minnie Minoso died March 1. His exact age was always uncertain, but he was believed to be 89. He was the first black baseball player to be drafted by the major leagues out of Latin America. His memoir was Just Call me Minnie: My Six Decades in Baseball.

Record executive Orrin Keepnews died March 1 at the age of 91. He wrote A Pictorial History of Jazz.
