Today's round of discussion brings us to just a little more than halfway through The Night Watch, having read chapters 1-3 of the 1944 section, and I thought I'd mix it up this time. Since discussion was a little sparse through the first section, I wanted to open things up to a more general discussion.

If you have specific topics you'd like to discuss in another thread, feel free to start one! Just click the "Post a new topic" link over on the right. Remember to title your thread along the lines of this one: "The Night Watch: subject here".

So, I'm kicking off a basic open thread. What did you think of this part of the book? What struck you about it? How have your impressions of the characters and their relationships with each other changed?

I’m another one who went ahead and read the whole book last week. So now I’m eager to hear everyone’s further thoughts on 1944. In response to lorannen’s prompt, I have to say that I was very intrigued by the further details on Kay and Helen. Kay, especially, was cipher early on. This section really makes you re-think each of them.

Still lots of questions in this part of the book.. Nothing seems as it should be and I can't quite figure out how the relationships intersect which throws me off.

I'm having trouble determining why Helen is so upset that Julia allowed her to misinterpret Julia's past relationship with Kay. Is there something more than just the dishonesty bothering Helen?
