Hello everyone,

I am about to acquire a few books from the current run of the Everyman’s Library with probably many more to follow. While I was aware that there are two different publishers for the UK and US market, I would have just ordered whichever edition was cheapest. But then by chance I discovered an apparent difference between the two editions for Great Expectations; Amazon and other vendors list the UK version (ISBN 1857150562) with 462 pages and the US version (ISBN 0679405798) with 544 pages (both published in March 1992). The difference in length could be explained by the following part of the US edition’s description missing from its otherwise identical UK counterpart: “This edition includes Dickens’s original, discarded conclusion to the novel …”.

I have not found any other similar examples but I am now a bit wary. Has anyone encountered any differences between the two publications – not only in content but also manufacturing quality or appearance? I would love to know if I should prefer one over the other and if it would be apparent if I had a mix of them on my shelves.

Thanks for your input.

The original conclusion that was discarded in the revised edition is less than a page long. It couldn't account for the 82-page discrepancy in the number of pages between the US & UK editions.

Thank you for this information. I have since looked up the page numbers in the official EL catalogs (wasn’t able to find the numbers before) and apparently the vendors got the UK version wrong – it’s 552 pages, which actually makes it 8 pages longer than the US version. I don’t really believe anymore that there are real differences in content. Perhaps one version has additional pages with something like details on the the series as a whole or other books published in it; or both editions have those pages but the total number of pages is calculated differently for the European and US markets.

Anyway, if anyone has had the opportunity to make a UK/US comparison, I would still be interested to hear about any differences.
