As the winning reviewer of August's selection, The Violent Bear it Away, jhowell has the honor of picking our reading assignment for October.

Reminder: September's selection is 1862: A Novel by Robert Conroy.

Well thanks dystopos. hopefully, we'll round up some more participants. To that end -- I am going to pick something that may be more accessible with some Civil War historical fiction and perhaps a romance thrown in. (stop eye rolling). My choice for October is The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. ANd I have dutifully ordered my copy of 1862: A Novel.

I have read The Widow of the South and I intend to read 1862: A Novel.

I am new here but I hope it is ok to make a suggestion. In choosing something for southern readers may I suggest something political. We may be democrats and republicans but there is no way that we are liberals or neo cons. How about Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace Not Aparthied?

The democratic party was once the party of the Big Tent. Today it can't even win elections. The liberals out of the northeast control our party with their money. They hate American culture, religion and they despise the south and the people in the red states.

How do I know? The first thing I did when I came online was to begin reading the leftwing internet which is predominately out of the northeast. I read it for years until finally I could take no more.

I refer to the liberals as the old moneybags. In the last presidential election they SAID they were against the holocaust in Iraq. Then they told Al Gore that he would get no party money and no support which forced him to drop out of the race even tho polls showed rank and file democrats wanted him as our nominee.

Then the moneybags forced John Kerry off on us - thus guaranteeing that - whether a liberal or a neo con got into the White House the middle east policy would be the same. The main issue was the war.

Today an article by Pat Buchanan points out that we voted the warmongers out and put democrats into office and yet there are MORE troops in Iraq and Bush is planning to bomb Iran in spite of the fact that the majority of Americans do not consent to war.

Dennis Kucinich more truly represents traditional democratic party values and yet those in the back pockets of the liberals are the ones who will get the nomination. Go to opensecrets and find who funds Hillary's campaign chest.

Droves of Congress members have taken the Jew's tour of Palestine/Israel this summer and they accept pac money from the liberals. Kucinich toured Arab nations and his premise is PEACE.

Rahm Emanuel was born in Israel and served in its military and his father was a member of a group that waged terrorism in the building of Israel. Today Emanuel is a kingmaker in the United States government. He is the democrat who chooses party nominees.

Read Carter's book and also The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy by John J. Mearsheimer

The liberals are not good for America and they have destroyed our party with their hated of America. They gave us political correctness and diversity. Political correctness serves to hide the problems with diversity.

Would it be ok to build an Aryan Christian United States or do ethnic and religous states go against the US Consitution? We are securing an ethnic state for Jews so what is the difference.

What is the difference between an ARyan nation and a jewish state other than one is aryan and the other Jewish? How did we get to this point so that we are committing holocausts and locking people away without due process and supporting ethnic states?

The neo cons are now in the process of destroying the republican party which no longer represents the traditional conservative values. this white house is among the biggest spenders in history and neo cons have their roots in Socialism!

Liberals and neo cons are new elites who wish to replace the old ruling class according to the teachings of Leo Strauss.

I am a democrat but I am definitely not a liberal.

I realize dixiereader is new and can hardly be blamed for stating his politics, but this isn't the place. There are at least two active groups that dixiereader and anyone else who wants to get into politics should look into. I warn you up front that both groups are civil in tone, and want to keep it that way. We have lots of fun expressing opinions and discussing where we all are on the left or right, but you will be flagged for ad hominum attacks and other forms of mischief.

Anyway check out "Progressive and Liberal" and Political Conservatives". These two would have more than welcomed the above statement, I've made it myself (I'm in favor of a third party made up of middle of the road liberals and conservatives).

Let's not get political here. It's ok with me if someone wants to name a political book as book of the month, but leave off the commentary.

BTW, Dystopos, you may want to reiterate the way books are chosen for this group.

Books are selected by the best reviewer of a previous book of the month. Currently we are using a 1-month cushion, so September's top reviewer picks November's book of the month.

I hadn't considered whether non-fiction is germaine to discussion. One would think that discussion of a non-fiction work would focus on matters of evidence and conclusion rather than on style and theme. Though my inclination would be to avoid non-fiction, I wouldn't want to overrule someone's considered nomination without consensus.

opps I thought I was free to post whatever I wanted. I had no idea I was breaking any rules.

I can see you are afraid to discuss the new American ruling elites which is very good news for them. Taking over our nation will be a cakewalk for them. Welcome to Zionism and Globalization. The new world order.

Just think how different things would have been in the old south if all the men were as brave as you. I"m a female btw.

Is that the thrust of 1862 A Novel? I wonder since I haven't read it yet. All the men were scared of the yankees and refused to even discuss the situation over tea.

Meanwhile the women were mad as hell and were not going to allow no damn yankees to muck with the South. Suceed. Yeah thats the ticket. The south rules. We'll seceed from the union and have our own nation and do whatever we damn well please.

OOOOHHH no the men shout. Stop with such talk! We can never make it on our own because we depend up yankees! Such things are just not done! You will offend the yankees with such talk! Quick silence the women! Save ourselves!

We'll stop growing cotton and get service jobs. We'll serve the yankees and anyone else who scares us.

If people say things we don't like we can always censor them. We must show the yankees that we eagerly attempt never to offend them. They have the right to freely determine their destinies but for cowards it is to dance to the tune of others.

If they condemn our sins against blacks that is fine but we must never point out the things that they do wrong. Such things are simply not done. Political correctness you know. The liberals gave us that and we thank them.

And you call yourselves southerners.

As far as I'm concerned we can discuss anything the we want to discuss. I suggest creating a separate discussion thread when the topic veers, though.

OK, well, we're back. It's the 2nd of October and The Widow of the South is at the plate.

Post your reviews to Library Thing before the beginning of November. The author of the best review will have the honor of selecting our December book of the month.

November's selection will be made by geneg, who contributed the most thorough review of 1862: A Novel, which the group read during September.
