If you need an excuse to eat a piece of this wonderful confection today, it was apparently invented a hundred years ago today. I am not a chocoholic, but the combination of chocolate and cherries with whipped cream is heavenly.

There are other versions of the history, too, but I wouldn't pay attention to that when it comes to deciding whether or not to indulge today.

I hope you recover quickly MarthaJeanne! I couldn't find a Black Forest cake in this rinkydink town, so I had to improvise. My co-workers approved.

Everybody in my family loves this dark chocolate cake with a light cream cheese icing! If I forget to get this for them on birthdays, I will be sleeping in the garage with no heat and no blanket! This has been going on for 20+ years. I hope the restaurant never closes!

Fantastic excuse, and today only it has no calories... or I wish it didn't.

Reading the Wikipedia entry it was amazing to learn that in Germany it has to have cherry liquor for it to be legally (!) allowed to be referred to as black forest cake. I don't think I've ever had one with liquor, that I knew of.

In German it is Schwarzwälder Kirsch Torte - and Kirsch is not only Cherry, but also Cherry Schnaps. Also here, the 'icing' is whipped cream.

>8 MarthaJeanne: they both sound good, cherry schnapps would be rich in a cake. I think the black forest cake I could buy would be similar to yours rather than the German style.

I am also a big fan of Black Forest Cake (with 250 kcal/100g much lighter than the heavy hitting masochistic Sacher-Torte at 340 kcal/100g. Strudel, by the way, clocks in at 165 kcal/100g). There are two ways to murder a Black Forest Cake - either by soaking it in alcohol or by putting one of those tasteless conserved cherries on top.

What I want to know is why German Chocolate Cake has coconut in it. What's German about coconut?

Yes, I not only made my morning class today, but this afternoon we went to my favourite mall, and I had my cake. We also walked the whole mall and bought my husband two flannel shirts.
