Finished ROOT #1 tonight! Hermione Granger Saves the World, an LT Early Reviewer that has been sitting unread for far too long. Glad I finally got around to it, it had some fun essays. The content was a bit repetitive, but overall enjoyable. I'm a bit of a Hermione myself, so was happy to see her get center stage.

>14 kkunker: congrats! Interesting first ROOT.. what is the focus? I.e., is it fiction, non-fiction? And based around ... the general idea that .. Hermione would/could/does save the world?

16kkunker
Jan. 7, 2016, 4:22 pm

>15 avanders:: Its not my normal type of book. Basically its a non-fiction collection of feminist essays that critique/study the character of Hermione and try to give her higher standing than some critics. It's not all positive reactions, but it does try to show the real ways in which Hermione contributes to Harry's quest. They show her as an active collaborator, heroine, and as a balanced person. The authors try to present feminism in a way that could be attractive to today's young people through the lens of Hermione (bright at school, loyal to friends, caring for social outcasts etc.). And yes, the final chapter is called "The Real Chosen One" and says that Hermione saved the world, not Harry.

Finished ROOT #5 today, a Star Wars graphic novel Kanan: the Last Padawan, Vol. 1. It follows the Star Wars Rebels Jedi Kanan Jarus and fills in some of his history. It began with his final battle in the Clone Wars where his master sacrificed herself so he could escape, then continued on to his first few weeks struggling on his own.

>30 nerwende: nerwende: I quite enjoyed it. It was published in 2014, so its a recent Tolkien item. Seeing the manuscript editions and the evolution of the essay is insightful into Tolkien's changing views on Faerie. I would highly recommend it.

Finished ROOT #9 last night, recent fantasy novel The Death of Dulgath by Michael J. Sullivan. This book provides the conclusion to the Riyria Chronicles trilogy, I've really enjoyed both this series and Sullivan's Riyria Revelations trilogy. Royce and Hadrian are great characters.

33connie53
Mrz. 12, 2016, 1:13 pm

>32 kkunker: I know, I have 6 of his books (translated) and then 'they' stopped translating! I'm still angry about that. Royce and Hadrian (Rolf and Hadriaan in Dutch) are such a funny couple.

34kkunker
Bearbeitet: Mrz. 14, 2016, 9:17 am

>33 connie53:: I read Theft of Swords early in 2012 and I have read the rest of the Riyria books as they have come out. Last summer I participated in a Kickstarter project to independently fund Michael's publication of Dulgath, since he is currently under contract for his new series. The project received huge support from readers and we got all sorts of fun rewards depending on the donation level. I received an inscribed hardcover copy, signed bookplates for the other books in the series, a signed paperback copy, a map, poster, and mug. The whole process was fun to watch, and Michael and Robin are currently working on a Making of The Death of Dulgath ebook for all the donors to show some behind-the-scenes of writing a book. I just checked out Hollow World, his sci-fi book, from the library, and hope to start it soon.

I thoroughly enjoy Royce and Hadrian adventures. Maybe after The Legends of the First Empire series is published fans may get more Riyria stories.

Finished ROOT #10 last night, Toward the Gleam an Inklings inspired novel.

37nerwende
Mrz. 25, 2016, 6:29 am

Did you like it? I've just looked at at the reviews and I'd be curious to read it. Didn't the Estate try to prevent a similar "Tolkien as a fictional character" book from being published a few years ago?

38kkunker
Bearbeitet: Mrz. 25, 2016, 7:39 am

>37 nerwende:: I have heard that the Estate is very protective. I read Mirkwood: A Novel about JRR Tolkien a couple years ago, which had a very different style. I think it might have been intended as a series, but I don't think any other volumes came out. That may be what you are thinking of.

Toward the Gleam was fun since it included segments of fictional Inklings meetings at The Eagle and Child and I thought it got the period aspects pretty well. Seeing C. S. Lewis and Owen Barfield come to Tolkien's aide over his ancient manuscript seemed appropriate. Of course having an ancient manuscript which Tolkien translated takes away from his own inherent creativity, but I did appreciate his verbal sparring with and overall courage when encountering Alembert.

39nerwende
Mrz. 29, 2016, 4:03 pm

Yes, I'm pretty sure that Mirkwood book is the one I had heard about.

Finished #12 today, Star Wars Lords of the Sith. Very different from what I'm used to reading, which is the hero/Jedi point of view. This book is set on Ryloth and shows how the Free Ryloth Movement destroyed a star destroyer, stranding Vader and Palpatine on the planets surface. The reader then sees how the rebels try to take out their targets, how Vader and the Emperor respond, and how the Emperor uses every opportunity as a training session for Vader.

It was fun to see Cham Syndulla as the Rebel leader, since I've seen his daughter Hera as a leader in the Star Wars Rebels tv show (set roughly ten years after the evens of this book). Obviously Vader and the Emperor survive, but the thought processes of the Rebels and the assassination attempt were nice to see on paper.

Jun. 6, 2016, 12:28 pm

>48 kkunker: ... I also just finished that book! I thought it was a well done, very quick read. I had my husband read it next, which he did yesterday :)
It's somewhat simple, but I thought it had great reminders and I liked the way it handled the Joseph story throughout the whole book.
What did you think?

50kkunker
Bearbeitet: Jun. 7, 2016, 8:10 am

>49 avanders:: I quite enjoyed Max Lucado's look at the Joseph story. Seeing the themes broken down and explored in depth was instructive, and I really liked how he blended the ancient story with modern personal stories and made practical applications. The chapters may have been short but they were loaded with good content. I knew that Joseph's family was dis-functional but never really thought about all the implications that it involved. My copy of the book also included study guide questions at the back, which I'm going to look at.

Finished off #27 yesterday, Star Wars Tarkin.

Glad I'm able to stay on target for my yearly goal, all these new Star Wars items make it hard to remember I have older books to read. Luckily Tarkin was published last year, and I didn't get around to it. It was good to read before Rogue One since it focused on Governor Tarkin's supervision of the building of the battle station, and it explains how he acquired the title "Grand Moff."
