I don't have an excuse to buy this category anymore, but that doesn't mean I have to dispose of my favorites. I've got a short pile right here.
A Christmas Alphabet by Blue Lantern Studio, collects century old images of winter and the holiday. It's beautiful.
Cooper Edens and Harold Darling does a similar collection for Clement Moore's The Night Before Christmas. Hmmm, I'm not even going to try to find the right touchstone for the book. You can find it from the author page.
My girls and I always loved Raymond Briggs Father Christmas and Father Christmas goes on Holiday.
Jason Cockcroft's illustrations for Room for a Little One are just gorgeous. Moody and expressive and full of magical light.
The one I want to show you is Humphrey's First Christmas, written and illustrated by Carol Heyer:

Last year I discovered The Last Straw, about a vain and grumpy camel named Hoshmakaka.
Two other old favorites are Jan Pienkowski's Christmas: King James Version, with Pictures and Maud and Miska Petersham's The Christ Child.
I only have the small version of Pienkowski. His graceful and detailed silhouettes are backed with glorious colors.
I continue to collect the Petersham book, as it is so old that condition of the pages is an issue. But the colors are saturated, the compositions elegant.

One of my favorites is William Joyce's Santa Calls, with the creative story and visual allusions to N.C. Wyeth's art and Little Nemo and Oz. Another is Robert Sabuda's pop-up version of Night Before Christmas.
