I'm thinking of throwing a ghost-story reading party for Hallowe'en, at which partygoers would take turns reading ghost stories. Has anyone ever done this? Any ideas about what works and what doesn't?

ohhhhh - I do!! They are so much fun! We take turns reading from books of short stories. It seems to work best if it is a small party of people. Large parties tend to have at least one person who gets antsy or bored, or doesn't like to read aloud etc.
We set it up like a seance where we all sit around a table holding hands, we cover the table and chairs with a bunch of Saris and drape them over the floor lamps, so that it is nice and dark. We have this globe with a Genii head in it that we use as a centerpiece and use a book light too read by. I have found that if you try to keep the stories limited to about five minutes each it keeps a nice pace.
Have fun!

I remember a party when I was a lad where the lights were dimmed to almost darkness and objects were passed around as the host told us about the pieces of the departed we were handling. A huge sponge in a bowl of water was a brain, chalk was finger bones, a bowl of franks & beans was his guts, dowels were arm & leg bones, etc. You get the idea.

As for short spooky stories to tell I would highly recommend these: Scary Stories to tell in the Dark series by Alvin Schwartz.

They're very short and only a few pages each.

I once went to a party where we took turns reading stories by Edgar Allan Poe. We turned all the lights out except for a small lamp next to the reader's chair. It was a lot of fun.

Someday I want to host a ghost-story Halloween party!
