I adore this musical. Decades ago, when our local theater group did it, my daughters and I went to as many performances as we could. So, when I discovered the movie version, I ordered it and the video recording of the Broadway production.
The 2014 film is mostly faithful. Meryl Streep is quite good as the Witch. And film allows for some improvements in such things as being swallowed by a wolf.
But I found so much more to love in the 1989 PBS’s American Playhouse taping of the almost complete original Broadway cast. I thought I didn't like Bernadette Peters, but I have to revise that thought. She was perfection here. Her pacing and tone and changeability are wonderful.
The later film has perhaps cut one or two scenes and numbers that I found key. (I'll need to go back and look again.) The Playhouse version's performances are more emotion tugging, at least for me. The music and lyrics are so dear. And the costumes are wows!
