for fun has anyone royally screwed up some cooking recently and found they had a new dish that wasn't bad.

Today I threw some vegetables and tofu in a dashi stock I made and it was rather bland so I threw in a lot of rice hoping to absorb the liquid and make a pilaf. Well it did absorb the liquid but I forgot about it and it cooked on med-low for a couple hours and when I checked it was mushy.
So what to do..
I ended up mashing it like potatos (the rice was cooked to the point of falling apart anyway) and added some garlic/basil/soysauce and onion.

My new dish creation kombu mashed rice :) it's really not half bad

It wasn't recent, but I made a cake (because it contained no eggs, dairy, or butter, the recipe was popular during WWII when there were food rations) and left out some of the water. Don't you hate it when you've put something into the oven and then notice a key ingredient still sitting on the kitchen counter?

It's a spice cake with raisins, and its consistency because of the water omission was like brownies. Good stuff!

Editrixie: That sounds like a great recipe! Where's it from?

I'm surprised I remember, but I got it from here:

I imagine you could use Florida Crystals rather than white sugar.

Last night I was going to make a vegan version white chili. I can't find my good blender from when I moved, so I spent a bunch of time chopping white onions, tomatillos, garlic, jalapeno and cilantro, only to realize I had only one can of white beans. I had a can of black beans, though, so I decided to make do, and since it wasn't going to be like white chili anyway, I added some Boca ground round. It was so yummy! Not really a big mistake, because the beans aren't that different, but I still felt very resourceful ;-).
