Well one thing does lead to another. I decided to read Gordon Rhea's excellent series on Grant's Overland Campaign: The Battle of the Wilderness May 5-6, 1864, The Battles for Spotsylvania Court House and the Road to Yellow Tavern May 7-12, 1864, To the North Anna River: Grant and Lee, May 13-25, and Cold Harbor: Grant and Lee, May 26-June 3, 1864. I then picked up an illustrated coffee table volume: In the Footsteps of Grant and Lee: The Wilderness through Cold Harbor as well as he Maps of the Wilderness: An Atlas of the Wilderness Campaign and one of the Emerging Civil War series: No Turning Back: A Guide to the 1864 Overland Campaign. Gordon Rhea's quotes and footnotes motivated me into purchasing some books on the Union's staff officers: The Diary of Cyrus B. Comstock, A.A. Humphrey's Virginia Campaign of 1864 and 1865, and the excellent now bio of the Union's Quartermaster General, The Quartermaster: Montgomery C. Meigs, Lincoln's General, Master Builder of the Union Army.

While on leave this week I also stumbled across a new Sherman bio, William Tecumseh Sherman: In the Service of My Country: A Life. Returning home I found Amazon had delivered another new campaign study: Grant Invades Tennessee: The 1862 Battles for Forts Henry and Donelson.

Finally, I love the Internet, I discovered a reprint house had made available one of the oldest works on the New Mexico campaign: A campaign from Santa Fe to the Mississippi; being a history of the old Sibley brigade from its first organization to the present time; its campaigns in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, in the years of 1861-2-3-4
by Theophilus Noel.

And I hope Santa has all your wish lists!
