Hey all, this one is driving me crazy. I'm trying to recall a book, which may have been written for young adults back in the day, which I think I read in the mid 1970's. It could've been a short book or short story, I simply can't remember.

The most vivid scene I remember was the main character, a horse, came across a female horse late in the book, one he'd known years ago, that was now broken down and pulling a cart in a street. She was very malnourished and weak. The main character saw her eat a few scraps of hay or straw off of the brick street that had happened to blow by in the breeze, then very sadly look around for more, but none was there. The protagonist looks away for a bit and a few minutes later, sees the female horse laying on the ground with a slight trickle of blood coming from her mouth. He remarks to himself that he wasn't sure if she was dead, but for her sake kind of hoped she was. It was a very dark, sad scene for a kids' story, but memorable.

That's it, that's all I've got. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

Pretty sure this is near the end of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.

Ah, you are correct. Just looked it up, can't believe I forgot about BB.
I'm old, my memory is going....thanks for clearing it up!

Young adult literature was a whole different ballgame in the good old days. Snow over their heads, the horses were deads, and there was barely 'nuff coal for the fire.
