Fantastic, somebody new! Always glad to grow the group a bit more and make it less lonely around here. In terms of numbers you're approximately where I started when I discovered the list. I've made a lot of great discoveries from it since then, and really expanded my reading horizons.

You asked for recommendations, I'd suggest:

Children's: Swallows and Amazons
Classics: A Christmas Carol (timely!)
History: Millennium: A History of the Last Thousand Years
Memoirs: Black Like Me
Modern Fiction: The Grapes of Wrath or Lolita
Science Fiction: I, Robot
Thrillers: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Travel: Kon-Tiki

You've read several that I haven't gotten to yet and I'm looking forward to. I've been trying to pick more from the History section, but The Naked Heart wasn't one that stood out to me. Do you recommend it?

11tom_cook
Dez. 15, 2016, 8:28am

Thank you for the recommendations. A Christmas Carol is a great suggestion.

I have updated my lists to include books I have read, but don't know when. I have read Black Like Me, Lolita, and I, Robot, and I will definitely be re-reading them.

I didn't enjoy The Naked Heart, so I can't recommend it. I can't remember why I didn't like it, but I suspect it was too scholarly for a casual read.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

I think most people are aware of the story of A Christmas Carol. A short read about the spirit(s!) of Christmas.

13Cecrow
Dez. 19, 2016, 8:06am

I only just got to it last year myself, and thought that for Dickens it's surprisingly fast-paced. The entry in the 501 list includes all of his Christmas stories, but I only read "Carol" and marked that entry complete. None of the others sound like they're much worth tracking down.

A Sicilian Romance by Ann Radcliffe

A gothic novel that is very much of its time (1790). A repetitive (and often ridiculous) plot, that has some worthwhile moments scattered throughout.

15Cecrow
Jan. 5, 2017, 2:58pm

I've lined that one up behind Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, which appears to have preceded it.

Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady by Samuel Richardson

It took me 8 months to get through every letter, which says a lot about this tragic novel. I would have rated it 4 stars, but I felt it didn't get interesting until letter 200 or so. An abridged version would probably have been a better fit.

17Cecrow
Sept. 6, 2017, 11:26am

Congrats! I'm on page 900. I had an abridged version available but went with the full thing instead, and I'm not regretting it; I actually think the sheer volume of the story is part of what makes it so great. It slows the story down and forces it to happen in real time, so to speak. I'm sure I wouldn't have a tolerance for it if every novel were written this way though, lol.

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome

Chinese Shadows by Simon Leys

Apr. 29, 2019, 7:47am

>24 tom_cook:, I'm interested in that one, but noted it's a 1970s publication. How dated does it feel?

26tom_cook
Nov. 21, 2019, 4:36am

I wouldn't say it's particularly dated. It's the reporting of that time that makes it interesting, I think.

Memoirs by Pablo Neruda

This one might be more worth while to those from the Americas, or with a particular interest in Chile. I began to dislike Neruda part way through and so it dragged towards the end.

I've been a bit unluckly with my choices from the list recently. Let's hope I pick a good one next!
