January

1. Blood and Guts by Roy Porter 4 stars - a very readable short history of medicine and surgery. The reason it didn't get 5 stars was due to it's brevity - I often wanted more information than was provided. Would definitely read more books by this historian and more on this subject.

February

2. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams 3 stars - a disappointing read for me. Wanted to like it much more than I did. Wouldn't continue with the series.

3. Printer's Devil Court by Susan Hill 3.5 stars - a supernatural novella. The writing was atmospheric and reminded me of Victorian ghost stories. However, I found the ending unfulling and felt that parts of the story could have been expanded to provide a better tale.

4. The Travelling Bag and Other Ghostly Stories by Susan Hill 3.5 stars - 4 supernatural novellas. For me the title story was a mess with no explanation of how the narrator knew certain information and an epilogue (in the first person but from the point of view of another character) that had no explanation of what it was - a letter, a diary entry, something told to someone else - or how it came to be known. The 2nd story "Boy Number 21" started well but then fizzled out. It left me with several questions about what the author was trying to imply. The last 2 stories "The Front Room" and "Alice Baker" were much more entertaining and left me with a feeling of unease.

Purchased in 2017:

Mystery in White by J. Jefferson Farjeon - 3 stars - one of these forgotten mysteries from the Golden Era of crime fiction that has been republished as a classic mystery. Like the few others in this series that I've read so far this was a bit disappointing. An ok read but easy to see why it didn't stand the test of time like the mysteries of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, et al.

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood - 3.5 stars - not my favourite Atwood book. I'm not sure how much this added to the story of Odysseus and there were several parts of the story where I wasn't a fan of Penelope.

>12 Pigletto: I read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy around 1980 - at the time it seemed quite unique for its mixture of sci-fi and humour. As a young woman working in town planning, I was especially tickled with the idea of planet Earth being cleared to make way for an intergalactic bypass - the humour seemed fresh, inventive and clever. It was probably a pioneering book in its day as far as the mass market was concerned (I can't think of anything similar that was so successful) and came at the beginning of a period where comedy was supposedly the new rock and roll - so I guess it was a milestone of sorts. I didn't enjoy the rest of the series so much and abandoned them well before the end. I don't think they'd interest me these days - IMO they were of their day - but it was nice to think back on that time, prompted by your ROOT - thanks!

One of the problems I had was that so many of the things in the book I already knew about such as the number 42, the mice and the dolphins. It reminded a bit of watching a comedy film after liking the trailer and finding out that all the funny bits were in the trailer and you'd already seen those over and over again. My favourite bit was the intergalactic bypass.

I really thought I'd like it more as so many writers I like both of novels and tv series/films cite Douglas Adams as an inspiration. Oh well, I can thank him for that.

March

5. Death in Bayswater by Linda Stratmann - 5 stars - the 6th book in a series about a lady private detective in Victorian London. This was for me the best book in the series so far. The author always manages to maintain a balance between the MC being daring for a lady of the time but not acting in too modern a manner that it becomes unbelievable.

6. The Equivoque Principle by Darren Craske - 2 stars - this historical mystery started out well but ended up being pretty boring. It had quite a few anachronisms too. Won't continue with the series.

7. Nightbird by Alice Hoffman - 4 stars - I bought this in a sale just on the basis of the author and cover so didn't realise it's a middle grade book. It's a very charming magical realism story. If it had a bit more depth then it would have been 5 stars.

Purchased in 2017:

The Hydrogen Murder by Camille Minchino - 1 star - too much about the MC's feelings for the detective, plus the guy who likes her but she doesn't feel the same way and what she is wearing, etc. Also for a woman who has spent most of her life working as a scientist she certainly did some really dumb things.

The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella - 3.5 stars - I read this one for a challenge I was taking part in and although it's not my usual thing I found it quite funny. However, I'm not sure I would read more in the series.

Taken at the Flood by Agatha Christie - 4 stars - I thought I'd read all the Hercule Poirot stories but turns out I missed this one. I did really like this one apart from the last chapter where there was a really bad bit with a female MC saying she knew her guy was the one for her when he physically attacked her. Ew!

My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises by Fredrik Backman - 4 stars - I didn't like this one as much as A Man Called Ove. I had difficulty believing that so many people would discuss their emotions and issues with a young child. At times funny and at times moving.

The Wench is Dead by Colin Dexter - 3.5 stars - I love the tv series but didn't really like the 1st book. But seeing as the author died recently I decided to try one of the later books. It was really interesting as the historical story that Morse is 'investigating' is based on a real case. The Morse in this book is a lot closer to the one in the tv series and since it was written in the late 80s much of the 1970s sexism that was in the 1st book has been toned down.

Necropolis: London and Its Dead by Catharine Arnold - 3.5 stars - this was very intersesting and contained quite a bit of info that I didn't know. However, a lot of the book was dedicated to the Victorians so it got quite bogged down in detail about that era which I already knew quite well. The other areas of history were often skimmed over but for me were much more interesting.

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron - 3 stars - some of the essays were quite interesting or humorous but it was pretty shallow - a lot about beauty regimes, gourmet cooking and living the kind of life only rich people do.

>12 Pigletto: I didn't like Hitchhiker's Guide either. Not sure why but I remember thinking that the humor was grating on my nerves. I wonder if I might appreciate it more now. I thought the movie was cute- of course having Alan Rickman as the voice of the robot didn't hurt a bit.

I think I might have to poke around and see if he ever narrated any audiobooks. I might only listen to that one for the rest of my life. He was definitely a treasure and is sorely missed.

April

8. The Dancing Beggars by Eric Brett Young - 3.5 stars - a reprint of a Golden Era mystery. Like my earlier read Mystery in White this was not bad but not particularly good.

9. The Apple: Crimson Petal Stories by Michel Faber - 4 stars - a follow up to The Crimson Petal and the White with short stories featuring some of the characters. Some of these set before The Crimson Petal and some after. I really like this author's writing and enjoyed meeting the characters again but not a lot happens so I'm not sure people who haven't read and liked The Crimson Petal would find much to enjoy here.

10. Graceling by Kristen Cashore - this was a reread for me. I read it ages ago but never followed up on the series so read it again to recap on what had happened. I'm glad I did as I liked it a lot less than I did the first time so won't continue with the series. The MC's powers are just too convenient - her special skill or grace is survival so she wins every fight, can go without food, withstand extremely cold temperatures, etc. Also her love interest is called Po and I couldn't get Po from the Teletubbies out of my head.

11. The Unseen Guest by Maryrose Wood - 3 stars - this is quite a fun middle grade series but not much happened in this one even though it's over 350 pages. Seemingly the author starts to actually answer some of the questions that have been raised at the start of the series in the next book so I'll give that one a try. The author is American but does a pretty good job of conjuring up the UK Victorian era apart from asides where she compares things to products and sayings not used in the UK.

12. Ozma of Oz by L. Frank Baum - 4 stars - I never read this series as a child and am having quite a bit of fun reading them now. This one contains most of the bits I liked from The Return to Oz film. The princess with all the different heads and the Nome King with his ornaments and of course Tik-Tok.

13. Bedlam: London's Hospital for the Mad by Paul Chambers - 4 stars - a really interesting look at the history of Bethlem Hospital and some of it's patients and staff.

Purchased in 2017:

Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman - 4 stars - Britt-Marie was a character in My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and I was glad that out of all the characters in that book she got her own one. This just edged a bit above the former book but for me this author is a bit formulaic - take a character that no one really likes or is a loner then show that there is sadness in their life. Introduce a character(s) who won't stop trying to get to know them and have them blossom at this unexpected friendship. I still do enjoy them but I think I'll give the author a rest for awhile.

The Trials of Rumpole by John Mortimer - 4 stars - got this from a charity shop. I do love Rumpole's mix of humour, intelligence and grumpiness.

A Dangerous Inheritance by Alison Weir - 4 stars - A good follow up to The Innocent Traitor. I didn't know much about Katherine Grey, Lady Jane Grey's sister so this was really interesting. I'd no idea she herself came quite close to getting the throne. I did enjoy the story of the other Katherine (Richard III's illegtimate daughter), however, as there isn't really anything actually known about her it wasn't for me as good as Katherine Grey's story. The connection between them was pretty tenuous. I'd have been happy with just Katherine Grey's story.

Hi Connie,

I'm still reading but taking part in a challenge on Goodreads and hadn't been keeping track of what I have read here for awhile. Although so far this year I'm doing too many rereads and new books - need to focus on those roots.

Currently reading:

A Dangerous Inheritance by Aliso Weir - I really enjoyed her fictional novel about Lady Jane Grey and this one is about her sister Katherine. Another new purchase though.
Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel - Just started this one and so far it's pretty good and it's a root.
The Secrets of Gaslight Lane by MRC Kasasian - I'm really enjoying this series which is a bit of a send up of Sherlock Holmes. The author manages to write a good mystery as well it being funny. Another root.

Hope everything is good with you.

May

14. The Book with No Name by Anonymous - 4 stars - I reread this one to see if I wanted to continue with the series. I did enjoy reading it - I'd forgotten quite a lot but decided I wadn't interested enough to carry on.
15. The Moving Toyshop by Edmund Crispin - 3 stars - this had quite an interesting premise but I found it quite boring. It's not a long book but even then I found there wasn't enough story for me to fill out the pages.
16. Etiquette and Espionage 4 stars

Purchased in 2017:

Rumpole's Last Case by John Mortimer - 4 stars - another good book in the series
Timeless by Gail Carriger - 4 stars - a pretty good ending to the series
Blackheath Seance Parlour by Alan Williams - 3 stars - started off well but I lost interest
Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Alan Dean Foster - 3 stars - the writing wasn't that great and I don't feel it really added anything to the story

June

17. The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan - 4 stars - still enjoying this series
18. Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz - 4 stars - a book within a book - pretty entertaining
19. The Secrets of Gaslight Lane by MRC Kasasian - 4 stars - this Sherlock Holmes pastiche series is still very entertaining with a decent mystery in each story
20. Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin - 2 stars - there was hardly any investigation into the mystery so most of the book was about the main character who I didn't like
21. Jane Boleyn by Julia Fox - 3 stars - there isn't enough known about Jane Boleyn for a book about her. This was mainly about Henry and his wives. Lots of Jane might have been there and she might have thought this but no real info. Many times the author had to keep referring to Anne as Jane's sister in law to try to keep up a connection with who the book was supposed to be about. It was an easy read though with quite a bit of info about Henry and the Boleyn and Howard families.
22. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce - 4 stars - didn't enjoy it as much as Harold Fry. It might be the gap between them as there were some parts of Harold Fry that I couldn't remember. Will reread both at some point.
23. Living with the Dead 4 stars
24. Curtsies and Conspiracies 4 stars
25. Waistcoats and Weaponry 3 stars
