More books read in January:

3. Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh
Enormous, but an unabridged audio helps with that...

4. The Zero Stone by Andre Norton
Not quite sure if I've ever done a complete read of this book before or not. Not for years, if so.

5. Uncharted Stars by Andre Norton.
Sequel to The Zero Stone; likewise, I'm not sure when I last read this all the way through, if ever.

>9 DisassemblyOfReason: darnit that was a BB and you didn't even explain it! I clicked on the touchstone bc the author sounded familiar and .. well, I was lost from there on. Did you enjoy it??

(**BB = Book Bullet, meaning I was walking by and got hit w/ the bullet of wanting that book that you're talking about!)

Yes, I did enjoy Cyteen. Being one of Cherryh's books, it's a bit complex once you get into it.

The oversimplified cheat sheet version:
It's set in her Alliance/Union universe, after the Company Wars (i.e., after the planet Cyteen has become independent and is the center of the Union government). The dominant figure in Union politics at the opening of the story is a female scientist who controls a company that makes human clones - more importantly, they design the early education/training for the clones, which has a major influence on their society in the long run.

She's murdered relatively early on in the story. For a number of reasons, a research project is then put underway to raise a clone of hers to be as like her as possible; the rest of the story follows the girl from her early childhood on. (There are several reasons for the project - keeping powerin the hands of a few specific people, dreams of immortality, etc.)

This is actually a book with an ensemble cast, so we see the points of view of people who had no reason to like the original of the project, and who have different reactions to the little girl as she grows up - as well as the girl herself, who is very bright and can spot stuff that doesn't make sense about the situation around her...

>11 DisassemblyOfReason: thanks for the synopsis! It sounds like you would recommend reading an earlier book by Cherryh before tackling Cyteen?

No, actually; Cyteen is a good place to start. It's part of a larger universe, but in between chapters it contains extracts from history/civics lessons and such, so you get some potted synopses of the official line their government chooses to take on some subjects, that sort of thing.

If you were to get hold of the old 3-volume version of Cyteen, though, definitely read it in order.
