I added five new German libraries, this time all of them in Germany. It turns out there are exceptions to the general practice of putting German Z39.50s behind passwords. Actually, these have passwords too, but they are published on the open web. I presume they're okay to use

The libraries are:

Bibliotheken Berlins
HHU Düsseldorf
Max-Planck-Instituts für Bildungsforschung
UB Braunschweig
Zentraler Katalog der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken in Brandenburg

Now, I got the list from this URL: http://www.allegro-c.de/z3950/z39_dbs.htm

The trick is, I don't know if I called them the right names or not. Germany names seem to be rather long, and one cannot always tell where they end and tail off into general description. (This is, if you don't speak German.) I'd also like to know what to call them in English. So if anyone wants to help me out here, I'd appreciate it.

I'll take a stab at translating these, since no one else has...

Berlin Library
HHU Düsseldorf
Max Planck Institute for Educational Research
UB Brunswick
Central Catalogue of Open Libraries in Brandenburg (or perhaps switched around to make it sound more Englishy -- Brandenburg Open Libraries Central Catalogue? Central Brandenburg Open Libraries Catalogue?)

Not a clue what the abbreviations mean.

Now I'll step back and let someone who actually knows German well correct me. ;)

I'm pretty sure that:
HHU = Heinrich Heine Universität.
UB = Universitätsbibliothek.

And that Öffentlichen Bibliotheken is just Public Libraries.

(The timezone difference means us L2 speakers could dig ourselves a pretty deep hole before Germany wakes up.)

MMcM: Yes, UB is "Universitätsbibliothek", and Öffentliche Bibliotheken are Public Libraries.

So, no hole there ;)

The correct/full names are:

Berliner Öffentliche Bibliotheken --- Berlin Public Libraries
Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf --- University and State Library Düsseldorf
Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung --- Max Planck Institute for Human Development
Universitätsbibliothek Braunschweig --- Braunschweig University Library
Öffentlichen Bibliotheken Land Brandenburg --- Public Libraries State Brandenburg

How it's possible to add Libraries? For Germany the most important actuely is missing: http://dispatch.opac.d-nb.de/DB=4.1/HTML=Y/ - Katalogue of the National Library.

See this topic. Access to the DDB's Z39.50 server requires a password.

Password and access information to the catalogs in "Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund, a consortium of 7 German states, can be found here:

http://www.gbv.de/vgm/info/benutzer/04extras/extras_0065

It would be great if "Gemeinsamer Verbundkatalog" the main resource of this consortium, could be added.

As mentioned in message 9 of the topic cited here in message 8, one doesn't actually need the dummy password given. The GBV GVK is open.

I don't think Tim and his staff check this board. You should post it in the bug collectors group or write an email to Tim.
