HANS KUNG SLAMS CATHOLIC/PROTESTANT REFORMATION DECLARATION FOR IGNORING SCHISM (The Tablet)

“In today’s world, Christianity will only come across as credible if it presents itself in truly reconciled diversity.”

I like the phrase, "mutual Eucharistic hospitality”. As a member of the Episcopal church, I know Catholics and Lutherans are welcome to partake in the Eucharist. I don't believe I'd be able to partake in the Eucharist in a Catholic church -- at least not officially. That's kind of sad but not the worst. At least we no longer burn each other at the stake.

I think it is high time to recognize that while there is only one body of Christ, one holy, catholic (small c) church, there are many parts to that body. I come from a very fundamentalist/evangelical background to the Episcopal church which is about as far as I can go theologically. As much as I love the Catholic church for what it's given to the rest of Christendom, I cannot in good conscience be one (ordination of women, unmarried priesthood, etc.) I find the diversity between different denominations invigorating when we respectfully and lovingly disagree with one another. But when we're divisive (such as the Westboro church) we alienate others from Christ and dampen our witness.

So, here's to one Lord, one faith, one baptism! Here's to the body of Christ!
