THIS THREAD is for LibraryThing Members, and especially for “beginners,” to ask help and learn about combining and separating specific LibraryThing Works.
-- If a book is combined with other, very different books.
-- If a book won’t combine with others just like it.
-- If problems with any Work are overwhelming, or maybe you just don’t have time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN YOU POST:
-- Please give Titles, Authors, hyperlinks, and other information that will help.
-- If you post multiple requests at once, please number each group. Examples:
“Please combine:
#1: The Story of the Life of You
http://www.librarything.com/work/AAAAAAAA
http://www.librarything.com/work/BBBBBBBB
#2: The Story of the Life of Everyone Else
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ ”
-- Ask about sets of Works or Series pages, ask for opinions, or ask for help with specific languages, subjects, etc.; but please be brief.
-- Please do not give Search pages, Author pages, or groups of “possibles,” unless you have a specific question.
-- “Someone will be with you shortly.” Most requests are handled by our fellow LibraryThing Members, not by staff.
-- If you add to a post, please use “ETA:” or “EDIT:” to show what’s new.
-- Please note when a request is “DONE.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES:
-- If two works have more than 200 records each, LibraryThing staff may need to do the combining. Please post these requests to: http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602 .
-- For information and discussion, but not problems, please see the Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 .
-- For the related wiki page, please see: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Book_combining .
-- Please note Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for Contacting Members about Book Records at http://www.librarything.com/topic/30795#469616 ; if you contact another Member, please use Private Comment.
-- When this thread reaches 200 posts, please do not post here but start a new Thread. Threads under 200 posts load faster and are easier to navigate. Please copy these notes as post #1 of the new thread. Thank you.

The author of my four-volume set is Anna Catharina Emmerick. But that name is only listed on her author page in combinations with her editor and journaler. Could someone make it be listed by itself, thank you.
My book, with her name as sole author https://www.librarything.com/work/3755635/book/139813462
Her author page https://www.librarything.com/author/emmerichannecatherin which has 23 variations of her name, but should have one more, per above.

>13 Birlinn: The computer can only differentiate a certain number of characters. 'Royal commission on the' is already too long. They can only be divided, not really separated.
Someone had combined the separate page in, so that the aliasing to 'Scotland, Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments of' was being sent back to the disambiguation page. I've got it sorted now, I think. It was also confusing that there were two splits for the same Commission.

It's a misfeature of LT that names that are the same up to some number of characters cannot be separated, they can only be divided in the same way that two authors with the exact same name can be divided.

I just added some audiobooks from YA Sync, a free summer audio book program and one needs combining, please.
The Gathering (Shadow House Book 1)
http://www.librarything.com/work/17989405

thanks to your (the groups) guidance last year, I've learned how to combine some of them but can't seem to figure out this one.
(I used to delete the book if the one I added was the only one, and then I'd pick a different edition to Add. I've learned!)

For future references - there is a new way that makes these very easy. Look at the bottom right menu on a book page. There is a link to add to the workbench (and another to open the workbench). You can add any books to the workbench and then it will allow you to see them on the same page so they can be combined :)

It is self-explanatory when you see it :) Try to add ANY two books to the bench - and see how it looks - just do not press "combine" at the end - you can then remove them from the bench easily. And adding them there do not change the books - it is like a sandbox that belongs only to you and allows to bring books on the same page so they can be combined without having to find editions page or an author page :)

I separated out my abridged and illustrated copy of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardobe from the unabridged work, but the unabridged work includes lots of copies with the abridged work's ISBN (000675368X). Should those be separated out too?

I would say yes. According to the description, 0001857010 is also an abridgement.
38jasbro
>36 Herenya:, >37 MarthaJeanne: I agree, abridgments get separated out, and ISBN is a good way to do that. One exception, I think, is where it's apparent (somehow from context or other information) that the "abridged edition" ISBN is ratty data for a record of the unabridged edition - e.g., the Member's title also says "unabridged." Then I wouldn't separate the record for an apparently unabridged volume to combine it with abridged editions, and yes that leaves the rest of LibraryThings with a quantity of ratty data on records we wish were otherwise accurate. Then again, I'm painfully aware that not all my ISBNs are correct for the books on our shelves ...
39Herenya
Okay, thanks! I've separated out the abridged ISBNs and then combined them.
>38 jasbro:: Not all of my books have accurate data, either. I suspect some of these people meant to add the unabridged book, but it's hard to tell for sure...

40Maddz
I would imagine it's probably to do with people adding books and being presented with a list of possibilities several hundred long and using the first likely match and not subsequently editing your record. It's a problem with older editions, especially ones that pre-date ISBNs, and I know I have that problem in my library from when I first started cataloguing. (At some point I must revisit my early records and clean them up...)
If there was an easy way to be able to pin-point specific editions from the add book list without adding a massive list of parameters to the search box, then hopefully that would help.

New one: all of the Dan Gutman "My Weird School Special" books have been combined into one work: https://www.librarything.com/work/14101567/editions
I started to separate them and am hoping someone can assist.
There are multiple books in this series, each tied to a specific holiday, and not to be confused with the author's "My Weird School" or "My Weirder School" series.
Thanks.

http://www.librarything.com/work/2464022/summary The Norton Anthology of American Literature is a work published in one volume, two volume, and five volume versions, with the five volume versions having much more content than the one volume version. All this has gone through many, many editions and I believe occasionally university-specific editions. Various individual volumes have been combined into the one work, and need separating out. What stopped me in my tracks is that someone else has done this, to some extent, and also separated out various editions, which in theory I don't disagree with, but in practice makes this a work I don't want to touch with a ten foot pole.
(In 2012, dltucker added The Norton Anthology of American Literature, Seventh Edition (1) to this work, so apparently stuff was better split out then.)

LT staff has combined two authors, Javier Zabala (http://www.librarything.com/author/zabalajavier) and Javier Pedro Zabala. But these two authors are two separate individuals. Javier Zabala, who is still alive, is an award-winning illustrator living in Spain and the author most recently of Madrid for Children. Javier Pedro Zabala is a Cuban writer who died in 2002 and who is the author of The Mad Patagonian. When I click on Javier Pedro Zabala's link I can no longer copy the link (it is in grayscale). The link originally read: http://www.librarything.com/author/zabalajavierpedro and now reads: http://www.librarything.com/author/zabalajavierpedro&norefer=2

This site is read by lots of smart people so I wonder if anyone can answer this question of mine: I would like to determine how many of the over 5000 books I have listed on LibraryThing (everyone of which I have read in full) are listed only by me. I know I could peruse my whole list to see which ones are only listed by me, but that would take a long time and I am wondering if there is an easier way to see how many of the books I list are not listed by any other person.

Of course both of these methods include any books that others have entered but the books haven't been combined, so your actual total may be less than it appears.

Thank you so much, Taphophile and MarthaJeanne. This is just what I was hoping for--and I am so glad I did not try a more time-consuming way to find books unique to me or nearly so. There are about 150 books which only I list, and about 115 which only I and one other list. Many of the unique to me books do not surprise me but some do. For instance:
3668. But Look, the Morn The Story of a Childhood, by MacKinlay Kantor (read 24 Dec 2002)
I would not have thought I was the only person to list it since it is not too old (hey, 1947--that's not so long ago) and the author is not obscure

Does anyone know how to tell whether the two books here are basically the same or whether the 'young reader's edition' is abridged?

According to WorldCat, this is the what is different in the young reader's edition:
This edition features new material from Saroo about his childhood, including a new foreword and a Q&A about his experiences and the process of making the film.
So it doesn't look like it's abridged but has additional material. Whether that's enough to make it a different work, I'll let you decide.

It's on this page http://www.librarything.com/author/eislerkim because everyone who entered it used Kim Eisler as the name of the author.
Everyone who entered the books on the other author page used Kim Isaac Eisler.
Everyone who entered the books on the other author page used Kim Isaac Eisler.
96Schmerguls
Thanks, MarthaJeanne. But this presents another problem. Since Kim Eisler and Kim Isaac Eisler are one and the same person, shouldn't the pages be combined or cross-indexed or something? If you look at the Kim Eisler page in Amazon it is clear that Kim Eilser and Kim Isaac Eisler is the same person, isn't it?
97MarthaJeanne
If there were books by several Kim Eislers on that page, it would be a case for dividing and aliasing.
In this case, neither LT nor LoC knows of any other author using that name. However Facebook and LinkedIn have a few people with that name. So there is at least the potential for future issues if the two are combined.

98Schmerguls
You are no doubt right but the subject matter of the books I submit make it highly likely that Kim Eisler and Kim Isaac Eisler are one and the same person. Should one ask him? or his publisher?
99MarthaJeanne
The author of these books is certainly the same person. The problem comes when another Kim Eisler comes complaining that her new book "Mama Pig and the Three Dancing Piglets" is showing up on an author page that is someone else and not her.
100jjwilson61
But surely this is a pretty typical case which has an accepted solution? I'm not sure what the hold-up is here. Either combine them or tell Schmerguls how to do it.
101jasbro
>94 Schmerguls:, >95 MarthaJeanne:, >100 jjwilson61: I have "split" Kim Eisler into (one) Author, then aliased that Author into Kim Isaac Eisler. 102r.orrison
Why not just combine them? Is there any evidence that there is another author named Kim Eisler cataloged on LibraryThing? The fact that there are people with that name on Facebook and LinkedIn seems totally irrelevant to me.
103jasbro
>102 r.orrison:, I'm OK with that, r.orrison, since it should still be possible to distinguish "Kim Eislers" whenever time a second one appears on LT later on. OTOH, MarthaJeanne got me wondering whether there's another way to accomplish the combination but anticipate possible Author disambiguations to come and, if so, which we would preferred. I certainly don't think we'd offend by combining "Kim Eisler" with "Kim Isaac Eisler" under present circumstances. I'd welcome other thoughts; thanks!

I just added a Disambiguation notice to the above page. I don't know how to combine Julia Smith's one book on this page, listed under "unknown", with her other two books at - https://www.librarything.com/author/smithjulia-1
I just noticed that the book, "Directory of American Women Composers 1 copy", was moved to "Julia Smith (unknown)". It still needs to be combined with "Julia Smith (1)".
I tried combining the three works so they would be listed separately under "Julia Smith (1)" but it did not work as I expected. Now only one title is listed.
Aaron Copland, his work and contribution to American music 2 copies
Master pianist; the career and teaching of Carl Friedberg 2 copies
Directory of American Women Composers 1 copy
These three titles need to be un-combined, but I don't know how to fix my mistake. Sorry.

No you can't combine those two pages. Combinations can only be done to the base page, not to the divisions. The one is aliased to the other. You can copy all of that to the other page if you like.

When I type nationaltrustengland in the 'Aliased to author code' box, what actually gets entered and displayed is zzzmandelernest.
History shows that I entered zzzmandelernest, but that isn't what I typed!
How can I prevent zzzmandelernest automatically overwriting nationaltrustengland?
Looking further back in the history, it looks as if user abbottthomas created a similar alias to the one I am attempting, using author code britainnationaltrust. That alias no longer seems to exist.

What is the author page you want to alias to? Search does not find an author named National Trust England.

Your test book is now appearing on the author page - sometimes when you edit a book the author updates on your copy, but not on the work or the author page you'd expect. On the work page, at the bottom of the right column in the Advanced box, there's a link to "Recalculate title/author". That fixed it.

Given initial publication in the early 1930s, many of the particular records on LibraryThing won't even have an ISBN associated. That being the case, I'm inclined to straighten out, clarify, or disambiguate anything we can (using titles, ISBNs, maybe media where that's apparent from the record), but give deference to LT's natural realignments. We maybe can't get it all - or even mostly - straight, but what's there is clearly wrong. We might at least begin remedying it as best we can. Shall we go for it?

That's a user-uploaded cover on Amazon, so LT can't snag it automatically. You have two choices to do it yourself. You can download that image to your computer and then upload it on the "Change cover" page, or you can right-click on the image, choose "Copy image location" and paste that URL into the "Grab from web" box on the Change cover page.

When copying an Amazon image URL into the "grab one from the web" box, you often get a better image if you delete everything from the first dot after the last slash to the last dot. I.e. delete the bold bits from
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61019vLquHL._SX353_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg
to get
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61019vLquHL.jpg
(Although in this instance it doesn't look any different. Sometimes it'll get you a bigger, clearer image, without a white border and "see inside" cruft.)
Here's one that gets a little bit bigger and quite a bit clearer when you edit the URL:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51-kMffS6oL._AC_UL480_SR309,480...

https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51thvCdEG+L.jpg
Then make sure you click the Grab button not the Choose File or Upload buttons. Getting the "We are unable to process that as an image" message is a known but apparently not fixable bug.

You paste the URL of the image (just the image, not the whole page) into that box. You get the URL of the image only by right clicking on the image and choosing Copy Image Location. (You can check that you captured the URL correctly by pasting it into the address bar. The resulting page should show that image and nothing else.)
Please note that the form field has http:// already filled in. So if you paste in a complete URL, double check that the box didn't pick it up as http://http:// before you click the "grab" button, as that would not be a valid URL. Better to blank the box before you paste.

From your catalog, click on the cover image and two options should appear, click on "Change cover"; or from the book or work page, click on "Change cover" in the left column. That takes you to a page with, among other things, these controls:
Paste the URL of the image (which should end with ".jpg") into the box below "Or grab one from the web", making sure that http:// isn't duplicated at the beginning. Can anyone figure out why this version of A World Out of Time
https://www.librarything.com/work/19841158
has been separated out from the rest
https://www.librarything.com/work/27590 ?
I can't see any basis for it. The disambiguation notice on the larger group is meaningless, since it refers to serialization in a magazine. There are also still some editions with the ISBN on the separated version in the main work. To the best of my knowledge, there are zero differences between the 1977 Del Rey publication and any other edition. This is also a case of "too much love", so recombining them will take some more effort than usual.

165MarthaJeanne
According to Worldcat, that ISBN belongs to the omnibus edition.
So, you first need to delete that from your entry. Then add something to your title to differentiate it from the other copies. After that it would be possible to separate it from the omnibus work and move it to the single novel work.

Thanks, Jarandel and MarthaJeane. I of course, don't own the book but my listing on LibraryThing is of all the books I have read. I read Strangers ad Brothers on 2 Dec 1984, it being the first book of the 11 C. P. Snow books I read. The others, in order, were:
1889. The Conscience of the Rich, by C. P. Snow (read 6 Dec 1984)
1890. Time of Hope, by C. P. Snow (read 8 Dec 1984)
1891. The Light and the Dark, by C. P. Snow (read 15 Dec 1984)
1892. The Masters, by C. P. Snow (read 17 Dec 1984)(James Tait Black Memorial fiction prize for 1954)
1893. The New Men, by C. P. Snow (read 20 Dec 1984)(James Tait Black Memorial fiction prize for 1954)
1894. Homecoming, by C. P. Snow (read 22 Dec 1984)
1895. The Affair, by C. P. Snow (read 24 Dec 1984)
1896. Corridors of Power, by C. P. Snow (read 27 Dec 1984)
1897. The Sleep of Reason, by C. P. Snow (read 30 Dec 1984)
1898. Last Things, by C. P. Snow (read 4 Jan 1985)
I kind of hate to delete the book because it takes the book out of the sequence in which it was entered--the order in which I read the book. I wouldn't know how to distinguish the book to make it clear that it is the entire work called Strangers and Brothers. I just know that it was not volume I of that book, which apparently was also published in two volumes I of course don't know the the ISBN number of the book I read. My note only shows it was 309 pages and published by Charles Scribner's Sons. Seems odd it would, being only 309 pages, be also published in 2 volumes.

You don't need to delete the entry. You need to delete the ISBN from the entry. You can leave the ISBN field empty.
For the title, a suggest adding something like (novel). But even a * or something so that it shows up by itself in the list of editions and we can recognize it in the list would really be enough.
If you don't change your entry it can't be moved. I think it is probably one of the 19 copies in the top edition. I see no sign that that novel was published in 2 volumes. I do see that the omnibus of the whole series was published in 3 volumes. The work it is currently in is volume 1 of the series, containing 4 novels.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

It seems you didn't have an author (or in this case the director) when adding the item, so it wouldn't appear on the Joss Whedon page at first.
You apparently added him later but probably didn't hit the "recalculate" link toward the bottom right of the book page then to make LT take it into account (though just letting it rest a few hours would usually do the trick too).

I am struggling with the disambiguation needed when different long-named authors share the same author name-string.
In English, correctly, the author name-string is "thepressandinformati" for "The Press and Information ..." , "thepressandinformati-2" for "Press and Information Office of the Federal German Government" and "thepressandinformati-3" for "Press and Information Office of Land Berlin"
I am trying to set up the equivalents for their official German names.
In German, the author name-string is "presseundinformation", which should be "Presse- und Information...", but is actually displaying as "Presse- und Informationsdienst der Bundesregierung".
"presseundinformation-1" is correctly "Presse- und Informationsdienst der Bundesregierung"
"presseundinformation-2" is correctly "Presse-Und-Informationsamt des Landes Berlin".
How do I change the base "presseundinformation" to "Presse- und Information..."?
And then how do I combine "thepressandinformati-2" with "presseundinformation-1" and combine "thepressandinformati-3" with "presseundinformation-2"?

You can't combine the separated authors. You could combine the disambiguation pages.
You can add a canonical name on the separated author pages. The disambiguation page will continue to have the computer's best guess of the actual name.
Please add links so people can see the pages you are talking about.

I'm not sure what to do now.
Went to director Marc Webb's "combine" page to combine my Amazing Spider-Man 2.
No problem there, but in doing my thing I happened to notice that 500 days of summer and the first Amazing spider-man movies are combined. Can't imagine how that could've happened.
I've never separated anything - I'm weirdly spooked about that, afraid I'll break something! - so what to do? Just click 'separate' on every amazing spider-man item (they're listed under 500 days of summer)?

To separate, click separate on every single one and then combine all those separated editions with the correct work. It looks scarier than it is and I've found that separation errors are much easier to fix than combination errors.

>191 kleh: If I'm following the discussion here, we currently have two disambiguated Authors, (a) Press and Information ..., and (b) Presse- und Information..., which may in fact be as many as eight distinct "Press and Information" offices. I'm gonna ramble a bit, and ask your indulgence/forgiveness if I get either too basic or too mired in weeds ...
LibraryThing is subject to the logical limits of its applicable coding technology, and can't distinguish between similar Author names that appear the same up to 20 characters. (I think it's 20 anyway.) It's as if a bunch of different Authors were all named "John Smith." The Author Division pages let us distinguish among these similar-named Authors as (1), (2), etc., and then assign all the Works that have confusingly similar Author names to their respective, distinguished Authors as applicable. (As a further step, we can also "alias" all of one or another Author division to a different, existing Author; for example, the distinct Author "John Smith (13)" is aliased into "John William Smith" - which gets its own further disambiguation!)
In case (a) here, the overall disambiguation page currently shows divisions and allocates Works among three distinct Authors having the same or similar name, "Press and Information ... ":
(Similarly, the overall disambiguation page for (b) currently shows divisions and allocates Works among five distinct Authors having as the same or similar name, "Presse- und Information... ." I won't detail those five here, but it's the same idea.)
For case (a), that leaves FOUR distinct, similarly named Authors: (1), (2) and (3), as listed above, plus the original (disambiguation). Because none of (1), (2) and (3) yet have Canonical Names in their respective Common Knowledge, LibraryThing has calculated "Press and Information ... (1)" to be Republic of Cyprus the Press and Information Office from the Works assigned to (1). Likewise, "Press and Information ... (2)" is calculated as Press and Information Office of the Federal German Government; and "Press and Information ... (3)" is Press and Information Office of Land Berlin. So far, these look OK.
The Combination Issue arises, however, with the common, original Author page, "(disambiguation)" at https://www.librarything.com/author/thepressandinformati, because LibraryThing no longer knows where to put the Canonical Name, "Press and Information ... ." (In case (b), the original page also had now-stray Common Knowledge "n/a" for Gender, which I changed to "(make blank).") Regardless of whether we provide Common Knowledge for the distinct Authors (1), (2) and (3), we still need to tell LibraryThing what to do with the stray CK that is the old Canonical Name.
If the Canonical Name, or any other CK, should be copied to (1), (2) or (3) instead of being deleted, now's the time to do it. This is especially helpful (hypothetically) where CK unique to one "John Smith" was entered before we disambiguated the generic "John Smith" into "John Smith (1)" through "John Smith (54)." Since there's nowhere to copy this old CK for the original "Press and Information ...," I think you're right to delete it on the Combination Issue page, re-saving that field as being blank.
Does any of this dissertation help at all, or have I just muddled the water and stirred up its soupiness? Please let us know if other questions, and how else we can help. And thanks for your interest and assistance!

>193 jasbro: The problem was that unless you hack the "Press and Information..." in by setting a canonical name before splitting, all the divisions appear to have whatever the default name for the first division is, which can be more specific than you'd want.
So you'd have divisions that look like this :

Since there's nowhere to copy this old CK for the original "Press and Information ...," I think you're right to delete it on the Combination Issue page, re-saving that field as being blank. "
The Canonical Name can't be copied to (1), (2) or (3), because all four need to be different.
And if the Canonical Name is blanked, then the name displayed for the base author name-string immediately changes, to one that is incorrect
I think it must be automatically recalculated from (1), (2) and (3).
I have come to the conclusion that the least worst solution is to leave the combination issue unfixed.
I'm with you all the way to the paragraph:

There are many ways this could have been handled without those limitations. It's not a logical limit; it's an arbitrary limit designed by humans to make things a little bit faster and easier (for the programmers).

>195 kleh: Got it ... I think. So part of the "problem" may be that "Press and Information Office ..." is NOT so much like "John Smith," but rather more like "John Smith," "John Jones," "John Johnson," and "John Brown." In that case, is it better to change the Primary Author on each linked Work, to add "... of Land Berlin," "... of the Federal German Government," or "Republic of Cyprus ..." as applicable? If we do that, it seems none of the Works should link to the "(disambiguation)" page, which effectively dismantles and abandons it until somebody else uses it again for another Author.
>197 prosfilaes: Thanks for your clarification. That statement was incidental to my "thinking out-loud" as I typed, and I probably should've deleted it. I only meant there are practical limits to the logic that LT applies on this point, just as such limits are inherent to any coding application. Since I'm a Member-user, and not a programmer, whether any particular limit is by choice or necessity seems immaterial to me. I'm just glad to understand what some of them (and their trade-offs) are, and to use LT in that context and framework.

>200 Collectorator: Ah, good to have confirmation of my conclusion that you just have to live with the combination issues message.
I have added disambiguation notices copied from Omar's.
I don't think I would ever have worked out that you need to click on another language first, in order to be able to edit the English CK!
Many thanks to all who have helped with this.

I was working on the author Omar Ali-Shah and a long list of nevers. Apparently I combined rather than nevered one item: Omar Ali-Shah with one of the 26 sub-author of Edward FitzGerald (1809–1883), the sub-author is "translator Edward Fitzgerald."
How do I fix this? Don't find the works on the main author page at all, nor listed under any author on the "examine 26 names" page.
Thank you!
Ops, wrong time loop, will post in 2021.
