We're falling behind! We were 41 books short of our goal in May so now that summer is upon is, let 's take a few of those lazy summer days and read a ROOT!
Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2017 and how many books they read by the end of January.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

At the end of June, anyone who hasn't read at least one ROOT will be removed to another list until they start.
3benitastrnad
Please add Talulah__ Rose to the list when you are feeling better. She put in a request last month to be added to the Stats list.

Thanks Chèli, hope you're on the mend soon.
Well done on reading your goal, Belva!
I feel like a fraud - started off in this group thinking I'd be lucky to read 25 books in a year, never mind 25 ROOTS. Didn't reckon on the encouragement of other members - and all the BBs. ;)

Thanks, Chèli! Hope you're back to 100% soon :)
I just added my first ROOT for June (The Dragon at Noonday, by Edith Pargeter) to my personal ticker and to the group tickers. Now at the halfway point for my goal (25/50).

Well done, Belva. Please look after yourself Chèli and take all the time you need to recover. Don't worry about us.

>7 floremolla: Don't feel that way, Donna! I was certainly that way my first couple of years, really underestimated what I would read. I think I did it again this year, too, because I had planned for 5-6 chunksters and so far only one of them has been read!
11brakketh
Slow May for my ROOTing but plan on rectifying this in June. Good luck all and lets clear some shelf space.
14Henrik_Madsen
First ROOT of June to report: A fine Danish novel by Iben Mondrup called Godhavn #23 out of 40 for the year.
16lindapanzo
I've actually read about what I thought I would as to actual print books. What I haven't done is "purged" my shelves. Usually, that's a cold weather project but maybe I'll do some this weekend.
17benitastrnad
I am in the process of purging and rearranging books I have had in stacks on the floor. Not as much "fun" as I thought it would be.
18clue
I've read two ROOTS for June so far: Elegy for Eddie by Jacqueline Winspear and The Distant Land of My Father by Bo Caldwell. Both winners.
19Jackie_K
>1 cyderry: To hopefully not complicate things too much, my total at the end of May was actually 22, not the 23 marked here. I had put my 1st June ROOT on my own ticker (hence the 23), but hadn't changed the group ticker as the group thread wasn't up yet.
I've just added 2 more to the group ticker (my #23 and #24 for the year, and #1 and #2 for June). My ticker is updated too.

I just finished Willa Cather: Later Novels (Library of America), which tied in with the VMC Group's May Read. In addition to keeping me well along on my ROOTing, this gives me my tenth doorstopper (7 of them LoAs) so far this year.

Finally a root for June after reading a newbie and a library book.
Back to the bookshelves, especially after my first major blowout for the year buying 15 books at a 2nd hand book fair. But at $2 a book what is a girl supposed to do when she finds treasures? Give them a home of course.

>22 benitastrnad: I quite liked it. Violent, yes, given that the main character is a former IRA "hard man", but the story went along very quickly. I've added the next book, Collusion, to my to-read list.

Third root for June - Spies by Michael Frayn. 37/40 for 2017. All tickers updated.

I got one off my shelf. Ghost Train to the Eastern Star by Paul Theroux, the sequel to Great Railway Bazaar has been on my shelf for a long long time. I started it several times and always put it down. Once I got a good start on it, it has read fast. This is a better book than is GRB. The author has mellowed out with age, and that makes GTTTES a much better book to read.
33CurrerBell
John Milton, Paradise Lost (Norton Critical 2d ed), reread of PL and first-read of Norton's supplementary materials. I also have the third edition, whose supplementary materials differ substantially from the second edition's, and I plan to read it this month; but it's a newer buy and won't qualify as a ROOT.

>41 fuzzi: Sadly no; I'm borrowing the rest of the series from my parents. They own all the books, and I have my own copies of books 2, 3, 5 and 6 because they are 1970s TV tie-in editions.
43fuzzi
>42 rabbitprincess: too bad. I'm glad you are enjoying the Poldark series. I think I've read the rest of the books only once before, many years ago, so it'll be somewhat new (again) to me.
45Tess_W
I'm just looking at the math, 1783 books, there are only 80 of us on the list; that 22 books each! I don't think I can do that even at my swiftest pace!
46Robertgreaves
No, we've already read 1260 books so we only have to read 1783-1260 = 523/80 = 6 1/2 books each, just a touch over my target of 6 ROOTS a month.
47clue
> 45 Tess, the 1783 is the total for the 6 months. The year's goal is 3566/12=297 a month. 297 X 6 = 1782 by the end of June. So, we need to read a total of 523 for the month to get to the 1782, which is 6.5 each if 80 are reading...I think.

I added another one to the finished list for this challenge. I finished Conspiracy of Us by Maggie Hall. I have only had this title on my shelf for little over a year, so it doesn't hardly seem like it qualifies as a book off my shelf, but since I had the sequel, I figured I better get them both off the shelves. I got a good start on the second in the series over the weekend.
54moonshineandrosefire
I'm doing a lot of Sudoku Puzzles, but also reading an awful lot as well - so far, finished my second ROOT for June on the 18th!
56cyderry
I'm having some physical issues - I took a fall several weeks ago and all I basically can do is sit and read - I hurt the knee that I've had surgery on 3 times and whacked out my primary shoulder so even holding a regular book is painful. But I've read 10 ROOTS thanks to my e-reader and audio books. So at least I've gotten something accomplished.
58johanna414
I've managed 3 ROOTS this month, so I'm up to 11/25! I've updated my personal ticker, but left the group ones alone.
Looking forward to summer vacation (starts tomorrow!!!) and focusing on lots of ROOTS!

Time to report my second ROOT of June and 25th for the year: What I loved by Siri Hustvedt which is a wonderful novel about life and loss.
70benitastrnad
I finished reading/listening to Colony: the Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of Molokai by John Tayman. This was a good example of narrative non-fiction that I have had on my shelves for at least 5 years. It is good to get it off the shelf.

Titus Andronicus is one of Shakespeare's most violent plays. It is probably also one of his weakest plays and it never really got to me.

Have fun with the grandkids, Cheli. I hope you have recovered enough to keep up with them!
I have been lagging behind on my ROOTs reading. The good intentions are there but all those pesky library books get in the way. Drat those borrowing deadlines anyway. I squeaked my last ROOT for the month in today to make a total of 6 roots for the month. So I am at 25/50 right on target - way behind for me. I will try to do better in July.

Strawberry Girl was a Newbery prize winning book back in the day. I wish more of today's children would read it, and that more teachers would use it in classrooms. But, as they say, so many books and so little time.

I finished two more titles at the end of the month. June 27th I finished Bone Man and Golem and the Jinni while I was back from Chicago. Golem and the Jinni was a fanstastic read and I highly recommend it. Bone Man is for those who love mysteries and those who like international crime mysteries. Both of these are included in my total above.

Hello everyone! Actually, I have been having a little trouble updating my reading ticker lately, although I seem to have gotten it worked out.
Due to everything that has happened with me just in the first few months of the year, I can already tell that my reading total will be significantly lower than it was last year. Although, I'm not too worried about that just yet! June's reading total was still slightly low - but I only read two less ROOTs than last June - so I suppose that it could have been worse. Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 2
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 5
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 2
I have only dealt with my own personal tickers, never touched the group ones.
