My niece emailed me an article dated 12/18/07, "Kindle: Great Service Needs a Better Device" by Lori Smith of MSNBC. Sorry I am a techo dummy so I can't post a link.
Interesting article. The author seems to prefer the Sony device although I have to say it was pretty much a toss up for me after I read the article. I think for me, techno dummy of a previous era, the Kindle will be better as it is supported by easy Amazon book downloading.
Hopefully, you can find the article and judge for yourselves.

Thanks for the heads up too! Since my Kindle was a gift from my hubby, he was the one that did the research. He said he had looked at the Sony Reader, and at $100 cheaper, it was tempting, but the interface for downloading books just didn't look like something I would be too happy with. He's the techie, not me.
The negatives about the Kindle in the article are the common negatives, but I have gotten used to it now and don't accidentally hit the buttons... although I guess it is a negative that there is a learning curve on how to hold the darn thing.
Well, gotta get back to my Kindle... downloaded a bunch of classics that I have been meaning to read for years and never gotten around to.

thanks, bereader, I was thinking that the awkward holding thing could be overcome. I am still waiting for my back ordered Kindle, but on the good side my SecretSantathing gift arrived yesterday.

Maggie1944... according to chatter on Amazon forums, apparently Amazon got a bunch more Kindles in and are shipping them. One guy ordered his Dec. 3rd, with a ship date sometime in January and he just got an email notification of shipment. Maybe yours will come soon too... I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Fortunately, I can still hit the next page buttons with crossed fingers ;).
Back to my books... I'm in the middle of 3 right now... 2 freebees from manybooks.net and a bestseller from the Kindle store. They got me, I tried the free sample (the first 2 1/2 chapters), got in to the story, and had to buy the rest of the thing. Oops, starting to ramble and get off topic. We are supposed to be talking about the MSNBC review, sorry.
One thing the reviewer didn't mention was the dictionary on the Kindle. In fact, not many reviewers have mentioned this. I think it is a great selling point, especially for reading the older classics that are overflowing with archaic words and phrases. With a click of the button you get definitions. I think its a great feature. I don't know if the Sony Reader has anything like that, the review didn't say.

bereader, your words is music in my ears. I like the idea of a built-in dictionary, mine are big and heavy. I have received no info so far....it is Friday, 5:30 pm here in Seattle. So maybe tomorrow? maybe Monday? but probably not Tuesday. I'll let you know when I know.
Thanks for the encouragement.

So, bereader, I just looked at your profile and there are no books cataloged. Are you on this site just to promote your product? I feel honor bound to warn you the people on this site take LibraryThing pretty seriously and do not like people who use it for commercial purposes.

#8 Good eye! I was afraid I might be taken for a shill in starting this group. My motives, however, are pure, and I second your message.

Oh Gosh!!! No NO NO! I am so sorry! I just joined a couple of weeks ago. I haven't figured everything out yet. Please don't kick me out. I have been feeling like I have been welcomed here. I am very sorry if I did something wrong. I will figure out how to catalog my books...
So, to be able to talk to people here I have to tell everyone what I like to read?
I just found out about this site, was looking at the groups, saw this one listed as a new group and since I own a Kindle thought I would be helpful and give some info, since that seemed to be what people were looking for. I really wasn't trying to promote anything really. I left messages about the new Readius going in production... I'm really not a bad person.
I'm sorry if I have offended anyone.
A little about myself. I have been a library assistant for 25 years... never got my Masters degree... got half way, never finished... never felt like I belonged with the professionals at work... I guess I don't belong here either. I love books, I love reading. I don't want to offend anyone.

bereader, if we misunderstood your product enthusiasm, I apologize. You can keep your library private if that is your choice. You can be as little or as much involved with others here as you wish to be.

I totally agree with hinsdaledog, bereader. We are a friendly group and you belong if you want to belong. All book lovers are appreciated here. Its just that we are protective of the integrity of our authentic experiences. Join some other interesting groups, post about your favorite books, or just join in some of the holiday silliness (see the Green Dragon group discussions).

you more than belong here. People are a little hyped up because lately others have been spamming the site and we don't want this to become like facebook that's all.
But a question about the kindle. Does it come with conversion software for the computer? Or do you have to convert everything through Amazon or what?

No software included. If you want to, Amazon will convert your documents for you. If you have Amazon send your file directly to the Kindle, it costs ten cents. You can have Amazon send the file to your computer (email) at no charge and then you can load it on the Kindle through the USB cable yourself for free.
Or, you can get the Mobipocket creator, which is free, and it will convert for you. (Kindle format is Mobipocket format)
Hope this answers your question.
I have some days off work, I will work on my profile.

I am awaiting my kindle but I would point out that manybooks.net (free books out of copyright) allows you to download in a kindle format now and http://www.webscription.net/ also has a format usable on the kindle (mainly scifi and fantasy books but many from really good authors and they are cheap).
My point being that already Amazon is not the only place you can go to get books for the Kindle.

#16 I'm interested to know when you ordered your Kindle and how long you've had to wait for it. Do they keep you updated? Thanks.

I ordered on 1/16 and all they really do is say they will email you when they have a ship date. I don't know when I will get it but from the forums at amazon it seems that it will take between 4-6 weeks to receive it.
I do wish they would give a little more information on when it might ship but I can understand why they might not do it , if they give a date and then can't make it people would not handle it very well. They allow you to cancel though up until the point that they are ready to ship, at which point they will charge you and keep you from changing the order, that is in my opinion better than what most online stores do.

I ordered mine on Dec. 9 and finally after much wringing of hands I heard they were going to ship it between 1/25 and 2/1. In fact, I received it on 1/24. I live near Seattle so I think I get things from Amazon relatively quickly. It was easy to get started with it and I have now been reading the NY Times since 1/25.

I'm so glad to have found LT and Maggie gave me a wonderful welcome in the other forum that is called "Kindley Book Club"...I don't want to discredit anyone so, I believe that it was Ginny's idea to start the book club. I found out about it myself when I was reading and answering questions in the forum over on the Amazon site. Otherwise, I would have never found this wonderful site! Thanks again for the warm welcome Maggie and I hope that you'll be reading books with us...you as well bereader. Thank you too for the wonderful warm welcome.
I ordered my kindle at the end of November, and I've had it quite a while now. It's a great new way to read ... I absolutely LOVE it!

Thanks for the invite to read a book with the Kindle-buddies but I am feeling a little overwhelmed with things to read right now. I am going to chip away at my TBR pile first before I join in with any new group reads. But I do appreciate the special invite. Thanks
