Oops, I guess we didn't start an August thread yet. Well, here goes...

Completed an interesting if rather unusual book, Feeding Nelson's Navy: The True Story of Food at Sea in the Georgian Era by Janet MacDonald. It is all about how the food and drink that fed the crews of the Georgian Navy was collected, prepared, transported, stored, cooked (or otherwise) and eaten. Including are details of the bookkeeping involved, who was responsible for what, and also what other navies ate and drank. And in the back are some recipes as well. Quite an enjoyable book.

Also finished a short one, The Engines Were Rolls-Royce: An Informal History of That Famous Company by Ronald W. Harker. The author is a former test pilot and sales representative for the firm and the book concentrates on the engine side of the company with many anecdotes and personal experiences.

I'm reading Guy Halsall's Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West. A mixed bag I guess - I can't accept his conclusions in some areas, others are much more convincing. Definitely a book that makes you think.

The main books I've read this month are Tomb of the Panzerwaffe (A) and The Early Morning of the War (A+). Both are very good but the second gives the First Battle of Manassas the modern-style operational analysis which it's needed.
