Marquez's Whores

I just finished Memories of My Melancholy Whores...I enjoyed reading it, thought the translation was good. It is short but I enjoyed the aspect of the aging man and his search for companionship and love. Although brief it was engrossing.

I am going to immediately suggest my father (91 yrs old) read it- in the past he read but as of late has not been able to get into a book- this might be the eprfect one for him.

I enjoyed that one as well. It's Garcia Marquez up to his usual magic. When I bought my copy, I went through the pile of books as usual to find the 1st that was in the best condition. Curiously, I found one that is bound upside down and bought that copy. Anyone else find a copy like that?

I haven't read Memories of my Melancholy Whores yet although I have a copy. I heard it is a bit depressing. I have put it off due to those reasons.
Does anyone know on his situation? I heard he was quite sick.. I also heard he had liver cancer? I hope there is more of Don Gabo for more years to come so we can enjoy more of his delightful stories.

this was definitely not depressing...just think about this...how can a 90 yr. old man wanted to be with a woman depressing? to me this can only be hopeful.

the depiction of the main character is believable and one gets a sense of the culture and context of his life.
