Two Guido's is a new group formed of reader's who love mysteries and want to share the mystery reading with fellow lovers of mysteries. The group will be reading and comparing and contrasting the works of Donna Leon, who writes the Guido Brunetti series, with those of Gianrico Carofiglio, the author of the Guido Guerrieri series. The two Guido's live and work in Italy. Brunetti lives in Venice and Guerrieri's place of residence will be unknown until we start reading the books. The group will read one book per month and alternate months according to the schedule set up inside the 75 Books Challenge for 2018 group.

Where to find this book.

The first book in our list is Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon. This novel was published in 1992 and is readily available in libraries world wide. It is available in translation in many countries around the world.

Amazon lists this book as being available in print, both hardback and paperback, as well as electronically as a digital copy. It is also available as a recorded book from many public libraries in both the US and the UK. It also appears to have a German recorded version, but I am not clear if it the recorded book or the TV show.

If you don't have this title in your collection your local library is a good place to start looking for the title. If they don't have it in their collection most US libraries offer a service called Inter-Library Loan (also known as ILL). This service can be either free or there will be a charge for the library obtaining the book for you. However, it is usually less money than the purchase of a new title and the libraries would be happy to help you make the request and for you to use the service. You will have to check with your local library to find out what their policies are regarding ILL requests.

It should be easy to find this title. Death in La Fenice I checked World Cat (the huge US database of books, it is said to be the largest catalog in the world) and it is available in around 500 libraries in the U. S. It is also currently in print and so can be purchased from multiple outlets in the U.S. and around the world from a variety of book selling outlets. Here are a few of the places that the novel can be purchased.

Amazon has both US and World wide web sites.

Alibris - https://www.alibris.com - this is a US outlet for used and hard to find titles. There are currently 308 used paperback copies of this title for sale in the Alibris database. Many of these copies are for sale for $.99. That means that usually you can have the book in your mailbox for $5 to $7. I have used this web site for years to purchase used copies of books and it is very reliable. I recommend this site.

Abebooks - https://www.abebooks.com - This is a US (and I think Canadian, but am not sure about that) outlet for used and hard to find titles. There are currently 482 copies of this title listed in Abebooks. I have not used this web site and so don't know for sure how it works but I am sure that some of our fellow readers have used it and can walk us through how to use it.

Book Depository - https://www.bookdepository.com - This web site advertises itself as the world's leading specialist online bookstore. They offer over 17 million titles, and most importantly with free delivery worldwide to over 100 countries. I have ordered titles from this web site and they have delivered to overseas addresses with no problem. They are rated as reliable, so I don't think there is any danger of non-delivery when using this site.

If you need to order this title you should probably do so soon as the Christmas rush for mail worldwide might cause delays.

There are also many large US based Used Bookstores in the US that would be happy to sell this title to any one of us. They have web sites were you can go to order the titles. These include, Tattered Cover based in Denver, Colorado and Powell's Books based in Portland, Oregon.

Tattered Cover - http://www.tatteredcover.com/

Powell's Books - http://www.powells.com/

If you need to order this title you should probably do so soon as the Christmas rush for mail worldwide might cause delays.

It is my lucky day. I didn't think that my library would have any of the Donna Leon books, let alone the Carofiglio books, and low-and-behold, our library has the first Carofiglio title - Involuntary Witness. Furthermore, WorldCat says that there are 340 libraries worldwide that hold this title, so it may be easier to find than I thought it would be.

I hope to start this book before I leave for Christmas.

Please take a look at the set up for this thread and see if something needs to be changed.

Also, we should discuss if we want to read a book a month or if we want to do it every other month. Feel free to comment.

Ah, I've been a fan off and on of the Brunetti series for a long time, and I wouldn't mind rereading the ones you have scheduled. Carofiglio is new to me - hope my library has them.

I had to request Death at La Fenice, the first Donna Leon from a different branch at the library - I read it before Christmas, since it arrived quickly. I won't offer any detailed comments, but I enjoyed it and think we are a good track

OK, are we going to make a fresh thread for the 2018 group? Benita, do you want to do it?
(You have access to the "edit" function on your original posts, and can cut-and-paste into the 2018 thread, preserving the touchstones.) Or do you want me to do it?

I am still traveling so could you please sent up the 2018 thread? I will be back at my desk on Thursday and since we have interested readers it would be good to get the thread set up now.

>15 tymfos: >16 benitastrnad: Jim (drneutron) said he will add the new thread to the 75 Wiki when it is up. He is holding a place for it with the Longmire name from last year.

I have the January book from Hoopla and the local bookstore called me that the February book just came in.

I managed to snag the first Carofiglio title from my library and read it over my vacation, but like others on his current thread Ihave had to request the first Donna Leon book from Inter-Library Loan. It should be waiting for me when I get back. I read it years ago, but rereading will be fun.

Just for the curious, I have spent my Christmas vacation out in the boonies in Kansas. No Inter-net at my house out there, and 12 miles to the nearest free wi-fi. I m now on my way back to Alabama and am now sitting at a Starbucks usuing their free wi-fi. I’ll be back in the inter-net world on Thursday.

The "Two Guidos" thread is now set up in the 2018 75 Challenge:

https://www.librarything.com/topic/280103

I included most of the information Benita posted at the top of this thread, as far as the group's purpose and suggestions about where to find copies of the books.
