Deaths in March - 2018

Sir Roger Bannister, the first man to run the four minute mile, died on March 3 at the age of 88. He was a medical student when he broke the record which explains some of his writing. His books include The First Four Minutes, Twin Tracks and Autonomic Failure : A Textbook of Clinical Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System.

Michele Hanson, newspaper columnist in the Guardian, died on 2 March at the age of 75, following a stroke. Her books included Treasure: The Trials of a Teenage Terror, based on her Guardian columns about life with her daughter, anonymous in the paper and published as a book under a pseudonym, and What the Grown-Ups Were Doing.

Emma Hannigan died of cancer on 3 March at the age of 45 - she had published several novels including The Summer Guest and a memoir, Talk to the Headscarf.

Inventor and stuntman Trevor Baylis died March 5 at the age of 80. His memoir was called Clock This: My Life as an Inventor.

Chess Grandmaster Anatoly Lein died March 1 at the age of 86. His books include Sharpen Your Tactics, The Latvian Gambit: A Grandmaster View and In the World of Tactics.

Long time sports announcer for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Woody Durham died March 6 at the age of 76. His memoir was called Woody Durham: A Tar Heel Voice.

Librarian, teacher and student of children's lit, Sheila Ray died on 2nd March. She was the author of The Blyton Phenomenon.

Backgammon champion Paul Magriel died March 5 at the age of 71. He wrote Backgammon and Introduction to Backgammon.

Former Nestle executive Helmut Maucher died March 5 at the age of 90. He wrote Leadership in Action: Tough-Minded Strategies from the Global Giant.

Historian Hayden White died March 5 at the age of 89. His numerous books include Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe and The Content of the Form: Narrative Discourse and Historical Representation.

Poet Lucie Brock-Broido died March 6 at the age of 61. Her works include The Master Letter and Trouble in Mind: Poems.

Comedian Ken Dodd died March 11 at the age of 90. His autobiography was called Ken Dodd: Look at it My Way.

Designer Hubert de Givenchy died march 10 at the age of 91. He wrote the forwards to several books including Audrey Hepburn: A Life in Pictures, The Givenchy Style and Five Beautiful Women.

Crime fiction author Peter Temple has died aged 71 on 11 March. His books include the Jack Irish series starting with Bad Debts and two books featuring Joe Cashin, The Broken Shore and Truth.

Science fiction and crime fiction author Kate Wilhelm died on 8 March at 89. Her books include Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang.

Famed fly fisherman Lefty Kreh died March 14 at the age of 93. A few of his many books include Practical Fishing Knots and Fly Fishing in Salt Water.

Pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton died March 13 at the age of 99. His numerous books include Touchpoints Birth to 3 Touchpoints 3 to 6 and Infants and Mothers: Differences in Development.

Clive Sinclair died 5th March 2018 aged 70. He wrote several books and short story collections as well as being known for early calculators and computers for the general public. A brief obituary here:—

In addition, the maker of the Sinclair Computer Kit (among so many other things) is still alive, I'm happy to say. I note that Wikipedia hasn't yet updated the author's page, but I'm sure it'll happen soon enough.

Guyanese author Wilson Harris died March 10 at the age of 96. His books include Palace of the Peacock and the Guyana Quartet.

Lebanese novelist Emily Nasrallah died March 14 at the age of 86. Her works include Flight Against time, Yawmiyat hirr and Das Pfand.

Science fiction writer Kate Wilhelm died March 8 at the age of 89. Her books include Where late the sweet Birds Sang and Death Qualified.

Holocaust scholar David S. Wyman died March 14 at the age of 89. He wrote The Abandonment of the Jews and Paper Walls.

Illustrator Robert Grossman (#2) died March 15 at age 78. He doesn't seem to have any entire books to himself, being mostly a magazine illustrator. However he also contributed to some children's books such as The Eighteenth Emergency, and did covers for political books such as Smells Like Dead Elephants. Perhaps his most famous illustration is that of Nixon as Pinocchio, with Kissinger as Jiminy Cricket perched on his nose.

Canadian comedian and comedy writer Mike MacDonald died March 17 , aged 62. He was one of the writers of the Jackie Chan movie Mr. Nice Guy.

David Delvin, a good sex guru, died March 9th 2018 age 79. He wrote The Book of Love and many other books. He also played a role in establishing the doctors (in UK) could write under their own real names. Previously this could lead to having one's license to practise revoked.

Philip Kerr, crime novelist best known for the Bernie Gunther series of 13 books, starting with March Violets, featuring a PI in Nazi Germany and postwar, died on Friday 23 March aged 62.

French actress Stephane Audran died March 27 at the age of 85. She is best known for her role in Babette's Feast. She wrote Une autre façon de voir la vie.

Cancer researcher Dr. James F. Holland died March 22 at the age of 92. He wrote Cancer Medicine.

Historian Arnold R. Hirsch died March 19 at the age of 69. His books include Making the Second Ghetto and Creole New Orleans.

Professor Saba Mahmood died March 10 at the age of 57. Her books include Politics of Piety and Religious Difference in a Secular Age.

Popular novelist Anita Shreve died March 29 at the age of 71. A few of her best known works include The Pilot’s Wife, The Weight of Water and The Stars are Fire.

Scholar Barbara Kiefer Lewalski died March 2 at the age of 87. Her books include The Life of John Milton: A Critical Biography, Writing Women in Jacobean England and Protestant Poetics and the Seventeenth-Century Religious Lyric.

Historian Russel Freedman died March 16 at the age of 88. His many books include Lincoln: A Photobiography and Immigrant Kids.

Baseball player Rusty Staub died March 29 at the age of 73. He wrote Few and Chosen: Defining Mets Greatness Across the Eras and Hello, Mr. Met!.

Drama scholar Mel Gordon died on March 22 at the age of 71. His works include Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin and The Seven Addictions and Five Professions of Anita Berber.

Dutch Politician, professor and Rightous Gentile Johan W. Van Hulst died March 22 at the age of 107. He was credited with saving 500 Jewish children from the Holocaust. He wrote Treinen naar de hel and Wat aan Westerbork Voorafging.

Aileen Paterson died March 23rd 2018 age 83. She wrote a large number of books for children based on a cat called Maisie.

Washington insider and widow of Claire Chennault, Anna Chennault died March 30 at the age of 94. Her books include A Thousand Springs: The Biography of a Marriage and Chennault and the Flying Tigers.

Environmental historian Alfred W. Crosby died March 14 at the age of 87. His books include Ecological Imperialism: The Biological Expansion of Europe, 900-1900 and The Columbian Exchange: Biological and Cultural Consequences of 1492 .

Journalist William Prochnau died March 28 at the age of 80. His books include Once Upon a Distant War: David Halberstam, Neil Sheehan, Peter Arnett and Trinity's Child .

Firearms specialist Sheila Link died March 30 at the age of 94. She wrote Women's Guide to Outdoor Sports.

Very sorry to learn that classicist and children's lit enthusiast Antonia Syson died on 25th March. She was a contributor to True to the Trefoil.

Dance historian Ivor Forbes Guest died March 30 at the age of 97. His books include The dancer's heritage : a short history of ballet and Fanny Elssler .

Cartoonist Lee Holley died March 26 at the age of 85. His collections include Ponytail and Ponytail Galore.

Cancer specialist Dr. Samuel S. Epstein died March 18 at the age of 91. His books include The Safe Shopper's Bible: A Consumer's Guide to Nontoxic Household Products, The Breast Cancer Prevention Program and The Politics of Cancer Revisited.

Actor Bill Maynard died March 30 at the age of 89. He wrote Yo-Yo Man: His Autobiography and Stand Up...and be Counted: The Other Side of Greengrass.

Shakespeare scholar and editor Barbara Hodgdon died March 22 at the age of 86. She was the author of The Shakespeare Trade: Performances and Appropriations and The End Crowns All: Closure and Contradiction in Shakespeare's History as well as the editor of several scholarly collections and of the Arden III edition of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.
