SEPTEMBER ROOT - Progress Thread

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2018 and how many books they read by the end of June.
Any members who have yet to record a ROOT, have been removed to a separate list until they start. The ticker totals have been adjusted accordingly.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Thanks for your efforts, Chèli. I've started a very fat ROOT, 980 pages, so I'm not sure how much I can contribute this month. But festival season is over, no travels planned, and if the weather turns autumnal, there'll be lots of reading time!

I am also 2 from my goal. I am reading one now, and hope to get another done this week. If I finish this week I hope to keep at it since I'm added more than I should have already this year.

Added my first of September to all tickers: Cyberman 1.2: Fear, a Doctor Who audio drama from Big Finish.

I need 2 more to meet goal too. I have one short library book and one ROOT underway.

I got my first star of the year since padding my numbers with manga volumes that are quicker to read. But I'm still proud of my novel reading. It's been a good year. I know I can do more because I have a ridiculous amount of free time in my life but sometimes it feels strange when I'm tooproductive. :P But in more seriousness, I don't like when it starts feeling like a schedule.

I finished my first root for the month in the wee hours of the !st. So now 41/48.
I acquired way too many books in August between visiting a favourite second-hand bookshop in Wellington, while on holiday and attending a local bookarama. I have probably ruined my chances of having less books on my shelf at the end of the year than I had at the beginning, but nonetheless pleased with my purchases, although not sure where to put them...

I've read 3 ROOTs during the first three days of the month but certainly can't keep up this pace. This puts me only 9 books from my goal for the year.

I read a bunch of stuff on Labor Day weekend, just some "little books" that I got as gifts, and some kids books. Tickers have been updated. Currently reading Aging with Grace which is about a scientific study on nuns and relates to Alzheimer's disease.

I've added my second ROOT of September to all tickers: Beneath the Mountain, by Luca D'Andrea.

Finished my first book of the month 14歳の水平線 (I would translate this as "14 on the Horizon") last night and just loved, loved, loved this book. I never read coming-of-age stories and I was just engulfed in this one. I loved everything about it. I read the last 87 pages yesterday which is the first time I read so many pages in Japanese in one day. I was just so eager to read till the end!

I just finished my first ROOT (read) of September, but have 7 more that I have moved off the shelves and rehomed, a total of 8 so far.

I've just added my first ROOT for September (#55 for the year) to all tickers. It was another good one - Bad Science by Ben Goldacre.

Another finish--Elizabeth Ann Seton in the Saints by Our Side series of biographies. I only wish I could be as good as she was! 3.5 stars Ticker up to date. This is ROOT #68 for this year! Seven more to reach my goal!

Root #2 for the month Some Luck by Jane Smiley and at over 600 pages, I was pleased at how quickly I read this. On to the next book...

Added my third ROOT of September to all tickers: Cyberman 1.3: Conversion, by Nicholas Briggs. Big Finish audio dramas make good accompaniment to knitting on a Sunday afternoon :)

Finished 2 ROOTs today (one audio, one print). My thread and all tickers updated.

I have reached my goal! I finished my second ROOT this month early this morning! I now need to keep going because my ROOTs are overgrown and my shelves are out of control.

I have finished another ROOT & am rapidly approaching my own goal - hopefully this month will see that happen. My thread and all tickers have been updated.

I have finished my #2 root for the month, Pied Piper by Nevil Shute, a great page-turning read. I am sorry to leave this book and yet on to the next I must go.

My first ROOT for the month is The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman, a truly humorous chic lit.

I finished my 10th ROOT, the first for September, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Tickers updated.

I'm going on holidays for about 2 weeks, and I'm taking only ROOTs with me (and ebooks), so I should be able to get to my goal of 12 ROOTs - but I'm not sure how much access to the internet I'll have to post about it.

Just added two ROOTs to all tickers:

Cyberman 1.4: Telos, the last part of the Big Finish audio drama by Nicholas Briggs (finished on Sunday)
The Silent Stars Go By, by Dan Abnett, an Eleventh Doctor story (finished this morning)

And that brought me to my goal of 100 ROOTs!! I will continue to work on reading my own books as the mountain of unread books is still huge but from now on, it is all gravy :)

Just finished another Root for the month, Larry's Party by Carol Shields.

My second book of the month is The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag. It's also the book that completes my challenge (although I have another ROOT underway) of 30/30.

I finished a book I have had on my shelves for a long long time. Anubis Gates by Tim Powers is a time traveling SCi/Fi fantasy classic from back in the 1980’s. It held up well, but it is not my favorite time travel book. I think that Connie Willis still holds that title.

Finished another ROOT. Which was a book. Which was a book in Japanese. I'm having such a good reading year! Finished reading Sumino Yoru's また、同じ夢を見ていた (I had that dream again) which I ended up enjoying even when I figured out the "twist" of the book about a third of the way through.

My friends, could I please ask a few extra prayers for my Mom. She took a fall and is in the hospital again - she fractured her pelvis for the second time.

Hoping it's not too bad but extra prayers can't hurt, right?

Update on MOM - they transferred her today to rehab and she is well enough to complain that the ambulance driver was going too fast and that the sun was shining her eyes and that the room they assigned her was too noisy. She'll be fine! Thanks for the prayers!

I knocked out another ROOT while I was at home. I have been reading through the Aurelio Zen series by Michael Dibdin and I got Blood Rain through Inter-Library Loan just before I left. I read it while I was on vacation and like the others it was a very good traveling book.

I really like this series. This one was set in Sicily.

I finished another one. Apostle: Travels Among the Tombs of the Twelve by Tom Bissell was a big long slog. It was hard reading and very academic. I thought it was going to be a book about his pilgrimage to the tombs of the twelve apostles, and it ended up being a history tome on the early church fathers and their various schisms and apostasies - if that is what they were.

I admit it - I'M ADDICTED!!! I just got 5 more books!

I know in my heart that it is out of control.. there is no way that I can ever read all the books in my possession in my lifetime and yet I keep getting more! I can't stop!

OTOH - at least it's not unhealthy like drugs or smoking or alcohol....but wait, I often drink wine while reading or eat candy or....

Should I seek help or just continue to suffer through? What do you think?

And besides, our inventory can be considered a future donation to a library or charity shop. Or a gift that will make someone happy. Or a way to help keep the family of the seller financially stable. Why jeopardize the good we do?

I've just added my second ROOT for the month (#56 for the year) to all tickers. This has been my slowest ROOT month so far this year. I don't think I'm going to get any more for this month, as I have a library book which I really need to finish to return at the weekend (I've lost count of how many times I've renewed it!).

Finished the last of the three ROOTS I brought with me on vacation: The Dam Busters, by Paul Brickhill. Added to all tickers. It didn't end up getting left behind in Scotland, but I will leave it with my parents in their "take to the used bookstore" pile.

I finished another ROOT. Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet. This is the third installment her Kingmaker Chronicles series. These are a mashup romance novel/ Greek mythology series and I love a good send-up of mythology.

I told my husband that I thought I had an addiction. He said "Books?" I nodded, he just shook his head.

I've several reviews still to add to my thread and have generally been rubbish at keeping up with LT over the past few months, but I'm pleased to say I've now met my ROOTS goal for the year!

It's a relief, because I'm suddenly a lot busier and my reading pace has slowed right down, but hopefully I'll manage a few more ROOTs before the year is out...

Coming from behind at 35/50, I'm now at 47/50. Only 3 more to go before I complete my goal!

I met my goal of 55 and then continued on for a total of 8 books for the month and 60/55. And I thought I was lagging behind because the library holds keep coming in hot and heavy. I guess I am still keeping up.

I finished another ROOT at the last minute. Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman was finished Sunday morning just in time to add it to this list.

I Pear Ruled Burial Rites because after having it 2/3's done it has been sitting on my bedside table for a little over three years. It is clear I am not going to finish it, so it is time to clear it out and move on.

I had two ROOTS that were works of non-fiction read for the month.

Apostle; Travels Among the Tombs of the Twelve by Tom Bissell - this one was a big boy, and wasn't that easy to read, but I finished it and got it off my TBR list.

Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman - this was a great read and one that made my best of the year list. It has been on my pile of books for ten years, so it is good to get this one gone.
