It was actually translated (as Death and Diplomacy in Persia, by Alec Brown) back in 1938, though of course new translations are always welcome. As for "one of the greatest novels," that's a matter of taste; I wasn't thrilled by it:

I’ve just read it for Shiny New Books. I tend to agree with a lot of your thoughts on it, though I found the style reminiscent of Bely. The book really suffers though from lack of scholarly notation.

It's a shame that it takes a spammer to bring this somnolent group momentarily back to life! I wish there were a way to get notified when someone makes a new post, or comments in a thread you've commented in; it might lure people back more frequently. It's discouraging to check every day for weeks and see no new activity...

I have a book 'His Nameless Love a portrait of Russian Writers" that has Yuri as author. The book is written by many contributors about the lovers of Russian writers,
Dostoevsky, Pushkin , Tolstoy and others. It was published in 1974 by Progress. Have you heard of it?
I did ordered his 'Death of the Vazir-Mukhtar today.

He was apparently a huge fan of and expert on Pushkin. I don’t know much more than what’s on the book blurb and there seems to be not much available online in English.

>2 languagehat: languagehat: my copy of 'Death of the Vazar-Mukhtar' arrived. I would like to share this with you "has never been fully translated into English until now. A version by Alec Brown has been published in 1938 as' Death and Diplomacy in Persia' but it omits key parts such as the prologue.'
just thought I would share with you, I have been trying to locate the Alec Brown translation.

I didn't respond because I don't know anything about Tsvetaeva translations!

My review of the book is now up. Maybe I’ve been slightly generous - it has some very good points but it certainly was a little bit of a slog at times...
