Hi I'm calm and I have been a member of LT and the 75ers since 2009. I live in West Wales with two cats, Xander and Lexa, and a houseful of books. I mainly read fantasy; speculative fiction and some historical fiction.

I don't post much. Though I do lurk on a number of threads.

I will keep a list of books read in the 2nd message and do monthly round-ups. I will also tag "read in 2019"

In 2018 I read 159 books. If you want to know more you can check out the "read in 2018" tag in my catalogue

I didn't give 5 stars to any new to me reads, though I did re-read some old favourites and they were all as good as I remembered.

These were the new to me 4 and a half star rated books (in alphabetical order). * = the top 5 of those.

Happy reading Calm. You are much better at it than I am! I mostly lurk but was saddened about Xander's leg. We have just gone through that as well - our almost 4 year old kitty Winnie (1 of 3 and she is the youngest) got a bump on her knee several months ago. We hoped it was a cyst but after an operation to remove it and retesting weeks later they found an early aggressive type cancer. They needed to remove her entire left rear leg on Nov 12th. It was a hard couple weeks at first but she is a strong determined cat and she has done much much better than I would ever have imagined. She can't get up on the bed and she isn't happy about that, but putting makeshift steps lets her get into her favorite chair. She can get up and down the steps in and out of the house. I hope Xander does well also.

>8 RBeffa: Thanks Ron. I hope your Winnie adapts quickly, Xander gets around quickly though he still doesn't jump up onto things. Steps at strateic points (up to the bed and windowsill) have helped. His remaining back leg is definitely stronger as he goes up a lot more quickly now.

>32 calm: Nice to see you checking in Calm. You've been a busy reader. One day I'll re-read the Dune series. I picked up Someone Like Me by M R Carey this year with every intention of reading it and I am hoping I can still squeeze it in. If not it will be one of my first for 2020. I also picked up the followup novel to Girl With all the Gifts, The Boy on the Bridge.

>33 RBeffa: Hi Ron - I've done a lot of re-reading this year and I enjoyed the Dune series. M. R. Carey writes really interesting books I hope you manage to read Someone Like Me soon it will probably end up on my best of the year list.

>34 quondame: Susan not counting re-reads the outstanding so far have been

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (and the rest of the trilogy)
The Tangled Lands by Paolo Bacigalupi and Tobias S Buckell (4 short stories set in the same world 2 from each author)
The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker (Trojan war through the eyes of the captive women)
Someone Like Me by M. R. Carey
Blood Queen by Joanna Courtney (Lady Macbeth as a historical person rather than the Shakespearean interpretation)
The Starless Sea: A Novel by Erin Morgenstern (I love stories within stories)
The Overstory: A Novel by Richard Powers
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (just a great fantasy novel with a lot of strong female characters)

I'm reading The Testaments at the moment and that will probably end up on the list as well.

>35 lkernagh: Thanks Lori I hope to get there :)

Hi calm, nice to see your post!

Of your favorites for 2019, I've read The Bear and the Nightingale trilogy and thought it a wonderful read too.

>37 Carmenere: Thanks Lynda. Kitties are well.

>38 quondame: Hi Susan. Funny story about the Arden trilogy I picked up the first book at the library and the librarian insisted that I read the rest of the books - so much so that she immediately put the other 2 on hold for me (as they were at different branches within the system).

The Starless Sea wasn't an easy read but I liked its complexity and it had cats, books, gaming and mystery so there were a lot of things that I like.
